Forty Collective Virtues of Ahl al-Bayt from Sunni Sources
Part One: The Six Canonical Sunni Hadith Collections
1. Salawat upon Muhammad Must Include the Family of Muhammad
English:
It was asked:
“O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you with peace, but how should we invoke blessings upon you?”
He replied:
“Say:
O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, just as You sent blessings upon the family of Abraham. You are indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious.
O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, just as You blessed the family of Abraham. You are indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious.”
References:
Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3370; also Hadith 6357.
Sahih Muslim, Hadith 406.
Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 483.
Sunan al-Nasa’i, Hadith 1289–1292.
Short comment:
The Prophet ﷺ permanently joined his family with himself in the supplication taught to Muslims for ritual prayer.
2. Another Canonical Form of Salawat upon the Prophet’s Household
English:
They asked:
“O Messenger of Allah, how should we invoke blessings upon you?”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied:
“Say:
O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad, his wives and his descendants, just as You sent blessings upon the family of Abraham.
And bless Muhammad, his wives and his descendants, just as You blessed the family of Abraham. You are indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious.”
References:
Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab Ahadith al-Anbiya’ and Kitab al-Da‘awat.
Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Salah.
Short comment:
This canonical variant confirms that members of the Prophet’s household and descendants possess a continuing distinction in Muslim worship.
3. The Prophet Left the Qur’an and His Ahl al-Bayt
English:
“To proceed: O people, I am only a human being. The messenger of my Lord may soon come to me, and I shall answer the call.
I am leaving among you two weighty things.
The first is the Book of Allah, in which there are guidance and light. Therefore, take hold of the Book of Allah and adhere firmly to it.”
He encouraged adherence to the Book of Allah and then said:
“And the people of my house. I remind you of Allah concerning the people of my house.
I remind you of Allah concerning the people of my house.
I remind you of Allah concerning the people of my house.”
Reference:
Sahih Muslim, Kitab Fada’il al-Sahabah, Hadith 2408.
Short comment:
At Ghadir Khumm, the Prophet ﷺ placed the rights of his Ahl al-Bayt beside the Qur’an and repeated his warning concerning them three times.
4. Charity Is Not Lawful for Muhammad or the Family of Muhammad
English:
“These charities are merely the impurities of the people, and they are not lawful for Muhammad or for the family of Muhammad.”
Reference:
Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Zakah, Hadith 1072.
Short comment:
The family of Muhammad ﷺ was given a special legal status separating it from the general recipients of obligatory charity.
5. The Family of Muhammad Is Protected from the Impurities of Charity
English:
“Charity is not appropriate for the family of Muhammad, for it consists of the impurities of the people.”
Reference:
Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Zakah, Hadith 1072.
Short comment:
The wording identifies the prohibition as an honour and ritual distinction for Āl Muhammad.
6. A Man from Ahl al-Bayt Will Fill the Earth with Justice
English:
“Even if only one day remained of the world, Allah would prolong that day until He raised in it a man from me—or from the people of my house—whose name corresponds to my name and whose father’s name corresponds to my father’s name.
He will fill the earth with equity and justice just as it had been filled with oppression and tyranny.”
Reference:
Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Mahdi, Hadith 4282.
Short comment:
The final universal restoration of justice is connected by the Prophet ﷺ to a man from his own Ahl al-Bayt.
7. The World Will Not End Until a Man from Ahl al-Bayt Rules
English:
“The world will not pass away until a man from the people of my house rules the Arabs, whose name corresponds to my name.”
Reference:
Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Fitan, Hadith 2230.
Short comment:
The narration gives Ahl al-Bayt a continuing divinely ordained role until the end of history.
8. Taking Hold of the Qur’an and Ahl al-Bayt Prevents Misguidance
English:
“O people, I have left among you that which, if you take hold of it, you will never go astray:
the Book of Allah
and my progeny, the people of my house.”
Reference:
Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Manaqib, Hadith 3786.
Short comment:
The wording directly associates protection from misguidance with holding to the Qur’an and the Prophet’s Ahl al-Bayt.
9. The Qur’an and Ahl al-Bayt Will Never Separate
English:
“I am leaving among you that which, if you hold firmly to it, you will never go astray after me.
One of the two is greater than the other:
the Book of Allah, a rope extended from heaven to earth,
and my progeny, the people of my house.
The two will never separate until they return to me at the Pool.
Therefore, consider carefully how you treat them after me.”
Reference:
Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Manaqib, Hadith 3788.
Short comment:
This version adds two major distinctions: Ahl al-Bayt will remain inseparable from the Qur’an, and the Ummah will be answerable for its treatment of both.
10. Love Ahl al-Bayt Because of Love for the Prophet
English:
“Love Allah because of the blessings with which He nourishes you.
Love me because of your love for Allah.
And love the people of my house because of your love for me.”
Reference:
Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Manaqib, Hadith 3789.
Short comment:
Love of Ahl al-Bayt is presented as the direct consequence of loving the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
11. Faith Requires Love for the Prophet’s Relatives
English:
“By Allah, faith will not enter a person’s heart until he loves you for the sake of Allah and because of your kinship to me.”
References:
Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Manaqib, Hadith 3758.
Al-Nasa’i, al-Sunan al-Kubra, Hadith 8176.
Short comment:
The Prophet ﷺ made sincere love for his close family a matter connected to the entry of faith into the heart.
12. Faith Does Not Enter a Heart Until Ahl al-Bayt Is Loved
English:
“What is the matter with people who converse, but when they see a man from the people of my house, they stop their conversation?
By Allah, faith will not enter a man’s heart until he loves them for Allah and because of their kinship to me.”
Reference:
Sunan Ibn Majah, al-Muqaddimah, Hadith 140.
Short comment:
Social hostility or coldness toward Ahl al-Bayt is condemned, while loving them is explicitly connected with faith.
13. Allah Chose the Hereafter for Ahl al-Bayt
English:
While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, some young men from Banu Hashim approached. When the Prophet ﷺ saw them, his eyes filled with tears and his colour changed.
It was said to him:
“We continue to see something in your face that troubles us.”
He replied:
“We are a household for whom Allah has chosen the Hereafter over this world.
The people of my house will encounter affliction, displacement and persecution after me.
Eventually, a people will come from the East carrying black banners. They will ask for what is good, but it will not be given to them. They will fight and be granted victory. They will then be offered what they had requested, but they will not accept it until they deliver authority to a man from the people of my house.
He will fill the earth with equity just as they had filled it with oppression.
Whoever among you reaches that time should go to them, even if he must crawl over snow.”
Reference:
Sunan Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Fitan, Hadith 4082.
Short comment:
The narration foretells the persecution of Ahl al-Bayt and the eventual restoration of justice through a man from their household.
14. The Mahdi Is from Ahl al-Bayt
English:
“The Mahdi is from us, the people of the house. Allah will prepare and rectify him in a single night.”
Reference:
Sunan Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Fitan, Hadith 4085.
Short comment:
The promised Mahdi is explicitly attached to the collective household of the Prophet ﷺ.
15. Another Canonical Version of the Prohibition of Charity
English:
“Charity is not lawful for us, and the freed dependants of a people are counted as belonging to them.”
Reference:
Sunan al-Nasa’i, Kitab al-Zakah; al-Sunan al-Kubra, Hadith 6106.
Short comment:
The special legal status of the Prophetic household also affected those formally attached to their household.
Part Two: Other Sunni Hadith Collections
16. The Prophet Left Two Khalifahs
English:
“I am leaving among you two successors:
the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic,
a rope extended between heaven and earth—or from heaven to earth—
and my progeny, the people of my house.
The two will never separate until they return to me at the Pool.”
References:
Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Hadith 21654.
Fada’il al-Sahabah by Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Hadith 1032.
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith 31679.
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir, Hadith 4921.
Short comment:
This important variant calls the Qur’an and Ahl al-Bayt the Prophet’s “two khalifahs” left among the Ummah.
17. The Prophet Expected to Be Summoned and Left the Two Weighty Things
English:
“I may soon be summoned, and I shall answer.
I am leaving among you the two weighty things:
the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic,
and my progeny.
The Book of Allah is a rope extended from heaven to earth,
and my progeny are the people of my house.
The All-Subtle, the All-Aware has informed me that the two will never separate until they return to me at the Pool.
Therefore, consider how you will succeed me in your treatment of them.”
Reference:
Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Musnad Abi Sa‘id al-Khudri.
Short comment:
The wording presents the Ummah’s treatment of Ahl al-Bayt as a trust for which it succeeds the Prophet ﷺ.
18. “Consider How You Treat the Two After Me”
English:
“I am leaving among you the two weighty things:
the Book of Allah
and my progeny, the people of my house.
The two will never separate until they return to me at the Pool.
Therefore, consider carefully how you treat them after me.”
References:
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir, volume 5, Hadith 4980.
Al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak ‘ala al-Sahihayn.
Short comment:
The final instruction makes treatment of both the Qur’an and Ahl al-Bayt a responsibility inherited by the Muslim community.
19. Do Not Advance Ahead of Ahl al-Bayt or Attempt to Teach Them
English:
“Consider carefully how you treat the two weighty things after me.”
Someone called out:
“What are the two weighty things, O Messenger of Allah?”
He replied:
“The Book of Allah: one end is in the hand of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and the other end is in your hands. Hold firmly to it so that you do not go astray.
The other is my progeny.
The All-Subtle, the All-Aware has informed me that the two will never separate until they return to me at the Pool.
I asked my Lord to grant that for them.
Therefore, do not advance ahead of the two, or you will perish.
Do not fall short behind them, or you will perish.
Do not attempt to teach them, for they are more knowledgeable than you.”
References:
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir, Hadith 4971.
Al-Haythami, Majma‘ al-Zawa’id, volume 9.
Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, al-Sawa‘iq al-Muhriqah.
Short comment:
This variant describes Ahl al-Bayt as possessing superior knowledge and warns against either preceding or abandoning them.
20. Ahl al-Bayt Are Like the Ark of Noah
English:
“Behold, the example of the people of my house among you is like the Ark of Noah:
whoever boarded it was saved,
and whoever remained behind was drowned.”
Reference:
Al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak ‘ala al-Sahihayn, Hadith 4720.
Short comment:
The comparison presents attachment to Ahl al-Bayt as a means of rescue during religious trial and division.
21. Whoever Remains Behind the Ark of Ahl al-Bayt Perishes
English:
“Behold, the example of the people of my house among you is like the Ark of Noah:
whoever boarded it was saved,
and whoever remained behind perished.”
References:
Fada’il al-Sahabah by Ahmad ibn Hanbal, volume 2, Hadith 1402.
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir.
Short comment:
This variant uses “perished” instead of “drowned,” broadening the Ark analogy from physical drowning to spiritual destruction.
22. Fighting Ahl al-Bayt Is Compared with Fighting beside the Dajjal
English:
“The example of the people of my house is like the Ark of Noah:
whoever boarded it was saved,
whoever remained behind was drowned,
and whoever fights us at the end of time is as though he fought alongside the Dajjal.”
References:
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir, Hadith 2636.
Al-Bazzar, al-Musnad, Hadith 3900.
Short comment:
The report combines salvation through Ahl al-Bayt with an exceptionally severe warning against fighting them.
23. Ahl al-Bayt Are Like the Ark and the Gate of Hittah
English:
“The example of the people of my house among you is like the Ark of Noah among Noah’s people:
whoever boarded it was saved,
and whoever remained behind perished;
and they are like the Gate of Hittah among the Children of Israel.”
References:
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Awsat, Hadith 3478.
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir, Hadith 2637.
Al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak ‘ala al-Sahihayn.
Short comment:
Ahl al-Bayt are compared both to the vessel of salvation and to the divinely appointed gate of repentance.
24. Whoever Enters the Gate of Ahl al-Bayt Is Forgiven
English:
“The example of the people of my house is like the Ark of Noah:
whoever boarded it was saved,
and whoever remained behind was drowned.
The example of the people of my house among you is like the Gate of Hittah among the Children of Israel:
whoever entered it was forgiven.”
References:
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Awsat, Hadith 5870.
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Saghir, Hadith 825.
Short comment:
The narration associates Ahl al-Bayt not merely with survival but also with forgiveness and repentance.
25. Ahl al-Bayt Are a Security against Division
English:
“The stars are a security for the people of the earth from drowning,
and the people of my house are a security for my nation from disagreement.
When a tribe from among the Arabs opposes them, they fall into disagreement
and become the party of Satan.”
Reference:
Al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak ‘ala al-Sahihayn, Hadith 4715.
Short comment:
Ahl al-Bayt are described as the Ummah’s protection against destructive religious disagreement.
26. Ahl al-Bayt Are a Security for the Ummah
English:
“The stars are a security for the inhabitants of heaven,
and the people of my house are a security for my nation.”
References:
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir, Hadith 6260.
Musnad al-Ruyani, Hadith 1152.
Mu‘jam Ibn al-A‘rabi, Hadith 2079.
Short comment:
The continued presence of Ahl al-Bayt is compared with the cosmic stabilising role of the stars.
27. Hatred of Ahl al-Bayt Leads to the Fire
English:
“By the One in whose hand is my soul,
no one hates us, the people of the house,
except that Allah will admit him into the Fire.”
References:
Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith 6978.
Al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak ‘ala al-Sahihayn, Hadith 4717.
Short comment:
Hatred of Ahl al-Bayt is not presented as a minor personal dislike but as a sin carrying an explicit threat of Hell.
28. The Prophet’s Family Must Be Dearer Than One’s Own Family
English:
“No servant truly believes
until I am dearer to him than his own self,
my family is dearer to him than his own family,
my progeny is dearer to him than his own progeny,
and my person is dearer to him than his own person.”
References:
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Awsat, Hadith 5790.
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir, Hadith 6416.
Short comment:
The narration makes the love of the Prophet’s family part of the believer’s ordering of religious loyalties.
29. People Will Be Questioned about Their Love for Ahl al-Bayt
English:
“The feet of a servant will not move on the Day of Resurrection until he is questioned about four matters:
his life and how he spent it,
his body and how he wore it out,
his wealth—how he spent it and where he acquired it,
and his love for us, the Ahl al-Bayt.”
Reference:
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir, volume 11, Hadith 11177.
Short comment:
Love of Ahl al-Bayt is placed among the matters for which a person will be questioned at the final reckoning.
30. Educate Your Children to Love the Prophet’s Ahl al-Bayt
English:
“Educate your children upon three qualities:
love of your Prophet,
love of the people of his household,
and recitation of the Qur’an.
For the bearers of the Qur’an will be under the shade of Allah on the Day when there will be no shade except His shade, together with His prophets and chosen servants.”
References:
Al-Suyuti, al-Jami‘ al-Saghir.
Al-Suyuti, Jami‘ al-Ahadith, Hadith 961, citing Ibn al-Najjar.
Short comment:
Love of Ahl al-Bayt is presented as a foundational element of Muslim upbringing alongside love of the Prophet and the Qur’an.
31. Allah’s Promise concerning the Believers from Ahl al-Bayt
English:
“My Lord made me a promise concerning the people of my household:
those among them who affirm divine oneness
and acknowledge that I conveyed the message,
He will not punish them.”
References:
Al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak ‘ala al-Sahihayn, Hadith 4718.
Al-Mukhallis, al-Mukhallisiyyat, Hadith 1598.

Short comment:
The report records a special divine promise concerning believing members of the Prophet’s household.
32. The Prophet Will Repay Kindness Shown to Ahl al-Bayt
English:
“Whoever performs an act of kindness for any member of my household, I will repay him for it on the Day of Resurrection.”
References:
Ibn ‘Asakir, Tarikh Dimashq, volume 45, page 303.
Ibn ‘Adi, al-Kamil fi Du‘afa’ al-Rijal, volume 5, page 243.
Ibn Hibban, al-Majruhin, volume 2, page 47.
Short comment:
Service and kindness to Ahl al-Bayt are depicted as acts personally acknowledged by the Prophet ﷺ in the Hereafter.
33. The Prophet’s Intercession for Those Who Love Ahl al-Bayt
English:
“My intercession for my nation is for whoever loves the people of my house.”
Reference:
Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, Tarikh Baghdad, volume 2, page 525.
Short comment:
This report connects love for Ahl al-Bayt with hope for the Prophet’s intercession; it is recorded in a Sunni historical-hadith work, though hadith critics have discussed its chain.
34. The Prophet’s Lineage Will Remain on the Day of Resurrection
English:
“Every relationship and lineage will be severed on the Day of Resurrection except my relationship, my lineage and my marital connection.”
References:
Al-Khallal, al-Sunnah, volume 2, page 432, Hadith 655.
Al-Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir.

Short comment:
The Prophet’s family relationship is described as possessing an enduring distinction that continues into the Hereafter.
Part Three: Sunni Tafsir Reports and Statements
35. Qur’an 33:33 — The Complete Purification of Ahl al-Bayt
English:
“Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O People of the House, and to purify you with a complete purification.”
Reference:
The Holy Qur’an, Surah al-Ahzab, 33:33.
Discussed in Sunni tafsir works including Tafsir al-Tabari, Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim, Tafsir al-Baghawi, Tafsir al-Qurtubi, Tafsir Ibn Kathir and al-Durr al-Manthur.
Short comment:
The emphatic verbal noun تَطْهِيرًا expresses a thorough and exceptional purification granted to Ahl al-Bayt.
36. Al-Tabari: Allah Removed Evil and Defilement from Ahl al-Bayt
English:
“He says:
Allah only intends to remove evil and indecency from you,
O household of Muhammad,
and to purify you completely from the defilement found among those who disobey Allah.”
Reference:
Al-Tabari, Jami‘ al-Bayan, commentary on Qur’an 33:33.
Short comment:
Al-Tabari interprets الرجس as evil, indecency and the defilement associated with disobedience to Allah.
37. Al-Tabari’s Tafsir: Ahl al-Bayt Were Specially Favoured with Mercy
English:
“They are a household whom Allah purified from evil and specially favoured with mercy from Him.”
Reference:
Al-Tabari, Jami‘ al-Bayan, commentary on Qur’an 33:33, report from Qatadah.
Short comment:
The early tafsir report combines two virtues: purification from evil and a special divine mercy.
38. Ibn Kathir: The Prophet’s Blood Relatives Are Even More Entitled to the Name Ahl al-Bayt
English:
“One who carefully considers the Qur’an cannot doubt that the wives of the Prophet ﷺ are included in the words of Allah:
‘Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O People of the House, and to purify you completely.’
For the context of the passage addresses them.
However, if his wives are among the people of his house, then his blood relatives are even more entitled to this designation.”
Reference:
Ibn Kathir, Tafsir al-Qur’an al-‘Azim, commentary on Qur’an 33:33.
Short comment:
Even while adopting a broad household meaning, Ibn Kathir explicitly states that the Prophet’s close blood relatives have a stronger entitlement to the title Ahl al-Bayt.
39. Qur’an 42:23 — Preserve the Prophet’s Family Relationship
English:
“Say: I ask you for no reward for it except love concerning the near relatives.”
It was explained:
“Say to those believers who follow you:
I ask you for no payment for what I have brought you,
except that you show love toward my close relatives.”
In another report:
“O my people, even if you refuse to support me, then preserve my family relationship among you.”
Reference:
Al-Tabari, Jami‘ al-Bayan, commentary on Qur’an 42:23.
Short comment:
Among the interpretations recorded by al-Tabari is the command to preserve affection and respect for the Prophet’s close family.
40. Whoever Dies Loving the Family of Muhammad Dies upon the Sunnah and the Community
English:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever dies loving the family of Muhammad dies as a martyr.
Behold, whoever dies loving the family of Muhammad dies forgiven.
Behold, whoever dies loving the family of Muhammad dies repentant.
Behold, whoever dies loving the family of Muhammad dies as a believer whose faith is complete.
Behold, whoever dies loving the family of Muhammad is given glad tidings of Paradise by the Angel of Death, and then by Munkar and Nakir.
Behold, whoever dies loving the family of Muhammad is escorted to Paradise as a bride is escorted to the house of her husband.
Behold, whoever dies loving the family of Muhammad will have two doors to Paradise opened for him in his grave.
Behold, whoever dies loving the family of Muhammad, Allah will make his grave a place visited by the angels of mercy.
Behold, whoever dies loving the family of Muhammad dies upon the Sunnah and the Community.
Behold, whoever dies hating the family of Muhammad will come on the Day of Resurrection with the words ‘Despairing of Allah’s mercy’ written between his eyes.
Behold, whoever dies hating the family of Muhammad dies as a disbeliever.
Behold, whoever dies hating the family of Muhammad will not smell the fragrance of Paradise.”

Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, Mafatih al-Ghayb/al-Tafsir al-Kabir, commentary on Qur’an 42:23, volume 27, page 166 in one edition and around page 595 in another pagination.
Al-Razi introduced it as a report transmitted by the author of al-Kashshaf and then wrote:
“This is what the author of al-Kashshaf narrated.”
Short comment:
This complete text is unquestionably present in major Sunni tafsir works. It is being documented here as a Sunni tafsir transmission; its presence in al-Kashshaf and al-Razi should not be confused with unanimous hadith authentication, since Sunni hadith critics have strongly criticised its chain.
Concluding Sunni Tafsir Statement
Fakhr al-Din al-Razi wrote under Qur’an 42:23:
English:
“Invoking blessings upon the family is a magnificent distinction.
For this reason, this supplication was made the conclusion of the tashahhud in prayer:
‘O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, and have mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.’
This form of honour has not been established for anyone besides the family.
All of this proves that love of the family of Muhammad is obligatory.”
Reference:
Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, Mafatih al-Ghayb/al-Tafsir al-Kabir, commentary on Qur’an 42:23.
Short comment:
Al-Razi’s conclusion summarises the collective evidence: the family of Muhammad possesses a unique ritual honour, and loving them is a religious obligation.
