Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl al-Khuza‘i — Messenger of the Prophet to Yemen, killed with Imam Ali’s side at Siffin

Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl bin Warqa’ al-Khuza‘i was not an unknown man.

Sunni biographical sources mention him in the books of the Companions and say that he and his brother Abdullah bin Budayl were messengers of the Prophet ﷺ to the people of Yemen.

Then both brothers stood with Imam Ali a.s at Siffin.

And both were killed there.

Core narration 1: Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl is listed in Sunni Sahaba sources

English:

“Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl bin Warqa’ al-Khuza‘i.”

Reference:

Ibn Abd al-Barr, al-Isti‘ab fi Ma‘rifat al-Ashab, biography of Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl.

Status:

Sunni biographical report.

Comment:

His entry is short, but the fact that Sunni Sahaba biographical works mention him is important.

He was not a random battlefield name.

Core narration 2: He and his brother were messengers of the Prophet ﷺ to Yemen

English:

“Ibn al-Kalbi said: He and his brother Abdullah were the two messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the people of Yemen.”

Reference:

Ibn Abd al-Barr, al-Isti‘ab; also quoted in Usd al-Ghabah.

Status:

Sunni biographical report.

Comment:

Read the wording carefully:

رسولي رسول الله

“The two messengers of the Messenger of Allah.”

So Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl was connected to the Prophet ﷺ through a recognized mission to Yemen.

Core narration 3: Both brothers stood with Imam Ali at Siffin

English:

“They both witnessed Siffin with Ali.”

Reference:

Ibn Abd al-Barr, al-Isti‘ab; Usd al-Ghabah, biography of Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl.

Status:

Sunni biographical / historical report.

Comment:

This proves his side clearly.

Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl was with Imam Ali a.s at Siffin.

Core narration 4: Abd al-Rahman and his brother Abdullah were killed at Siffin

English:

“He and his brother Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl were killed at Siffin.”

Reference:

Ibn Abd al-Barr, al-Isti‘ab, biography of Abdullah bin Budayl bin Warqa’ al-Khuza‘i.

Status:

Sunni biographical / historical report.

Comment:

This is the main killing line.

Both brothers stood with Imam Ali a.s.

Both brothers were killed at Siffin.

Core narration 5: His brother Abdullah was from the noble companions of Imam Ali

English:

“He and his brother Abd al-Rahman were killed at Siffin with Ali. He was over the infantry, and he was from the virtuous and notable companions of Ali.”

Reference:

Ibn al-Athir, Usd al-Ghabah, biography of Abdullah bin Budayl.

Status:

Sunni biographical / historical report.

Comment:

This shows the family’s rank in Imam Ali’s camp.

Abdullah was commander over Imam Ali’s infantry.

Abd al-Rahman was killed with him at Siffin.

Core narration 6: The hadith of Ammar explains Siffin

English:

“Woe to Ammar! He will be killed by the rebellious group. Ammar will invite them to Allah, while they will invite him to the Fire.”

Reference:

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 2812.

Status:

Sahih.

Comment:

Ammar bin Yasir was also killed at Siffin.

Ammar was with Imam Ali a.s.

The Prophet ﷺ said Ammar would be killed by:

الفئة الباغية

“The rebellious group.”

So Siffin was not morally equal between both sides.

Core narration 7: Ibn Hajar says Ali was correct because Muawiya’s supporters killed Ammar

English:

“The hadith ‘The rebellious group will kill Ammar’ proves that Ali was correct in that war, because the supporters of Muawiya killed him.”

Reference:

Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari.

Status:

Sunni hadith commentary.

Comment:

This is not Shia emotion.

This is Ibn Hajar saying:

عليا كان المصيب

“Ali was correct.”

Why?

Because:

“Muawiya’s supporters killed Ammar.”

Core narration 8: Ibn Kathir says Ali was upon truth and Muawiya was rebellious

English:

“By that it became clear that Ali was upon truth and Muawiya was rebellious.”

Reference:

Ibn Kathir, al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah, events of Siffin.

Status:

Sunni historical commentary.

Comment:

Ibn Kathir’s wording is direct:

عليا محق

“Ali was upon truth.”

“Muawiya was rebellious.”

So when Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl died with Imam Ali a.s at Siffin, he died on the side Sunni scholars themselves identify as the side of truth after the killing of Ammar.

Now ask honestly:

Who was Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl?

A man listed in Sunni Sahaba biographical sources.

A man whom Sunni sources say was one of the two messengers of the Prophet ﷺ to Yemen.

A man who stood with Imam Ali a.s at Siffin.

A man who was killed there with his brother Abdullah bin Budayl.

And what was Siffin?

The battle where Ammar bin Yasir was killed.

And what did the Prophet ﷺ say about Ammar?

“The rebellious group will kill Ammar.”

So do not pretend that Imam Ali’s camp and Muawiya’s camp were equal.

Do not hide behind “ijtihad” when the Prophet ﷺ already gave the sign.

Do not erase the men who stood with Imam Ali a.s.

Ammar bin Yasir stood with Imam Ali a.s.

Khuzayma bin Thabit stood with Imam Ali a.s.

Hashim al-Mirqal stood with Imam Ali a.s.

Abdullah bin Budayl stood with Imam Ali a.s.

And Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl stood with Imam Ali a.s.

They were killed at Siffin by Muawiya’s side.

Qur’an says:

English:

“And if two groups of believers fight, then make peace between them. But if one of them rebels against the other, then fight the one that rebels until it returns to the command of Allah.”

Reference:

Qur’an 49:9

Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl’s individual biography may be short.

But his position is not unclear.

He was with Imam Ali a.s.

He was killed at Siffin.

And Siffin was exposed by the blood of Ammar.

Imam Hasan a.s’s treaty stopped future bloodshed.

It did not cancel the hadith of Ammar.

It did not turn the rebellious group into the rightful side.

It did not erase the blood of Abd al-Rahman bin Budayl
