Ammar ibn Yasir: The Sahabi Killed by the Rebellious Group

Ammar ibn Yasir: The Sahabi Killed by the Rebellious Group

July 20, 2026EN

Ammar bin Yasir — The Sahabi whose killers were called “the rebellious group” by the Prophet

Ammar bin Yasir is not a weak historical argument.

He is not a disputed political slogan.

He is one of the clearest proofs in Sunni books.

The Prophet himself said Ammar would be killed by “الفئة الباغية” — the rebellious group.

And Sunni sources confirm that Ammar was with Imam Ali a.s at Siffin, while the people who killed him were from Muawiya’s side.

So before anyone tries to hide behind “ijtihad,” first answer the hadith of the Prophet.

Core narration 1: Sahih al-Bukhari — Ammar will be killed by the rebellious group

English:

“Woe to Ammar! He will be killed by the rebellious group. Ammar will invite them to Allah, while they will invite him to the Fire.”

Reference:

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Jihad wa al-Siyar, Hadith 2812.

Status:

Sahih.

Comment:

This is not a Shia report.

This is Sahih al-Bukhari.

The Prophet did not say “a mistaken group” only.

He said:

“The rebellious group.”

And he said Ammar would invite them to Allah, while they would invite him to the Fire.

Core narration 2: Sahih Muslim — the same prophecy

English:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The rebellious group will kill Ammar.”

Reference:

Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Fitan wa Ashrat al-Sa‘ah, Hadith 2916c.

Status:

Sahih.

Comment:

So this is agreed in Sunni sahih books:

Ammar’s killer group is the rebellious group.

Core narration 3: Ammar was with Imam Ali a.s

English:

“When Talhah, al-Zubayr and Aisha went to Basrah, Ali sent Ammar bin Yasir and Hasan bin Ali, and they came to us in Kufa.”

Reference:

Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Fitan, Hadith 7100.

Status:

Sahih.

Comment:

This proves Ammar was openly on Imam Ali a.s’s side.

Imam Ali a.s sent Ammar with Imam Hasan a.s to mobilize Kufa.

Core narration 4: Ibn Hajar says Ammar was with Ali and his killers were with Muawiya

English:

“If it is said: he was killed at Siffin while he was with Ali, and those who killed him were with Muawiya.”

Reference:

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Fath al-Bari, commentary on the hadith of Ammar.

Status:

Sunni hadith commentary.

Comment:

This is a Sunni scholar admitting the historical fact:

Ammar was with Ali.

His killers were with Muawiya.

Core narration 5: Ibn Hajar says Ali was correct because Muawiya’s companions killed Ammar

English:

“The hadith ‘The rebellious group will kill Ammar’ proves that Ali was correct in that war, because the companions/supporters of Muawiya killed him.”

Reference:

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Fath al-Bari, Kitab al-Fitan.

Status:

Sunni hadith commentary.

Comment:

Read this again:

“Ali was correct.”

Why?

“Because the companions/supporters of Muawiya killed him.”

So do not pretend both sides were equal.

Sunni hadith commentary itself says the hadith proves Imam Ali a.s was correct in that war.

Core narration 6: Ibn Hajar says Ali was the Imam whose obedience was obligatory

English:

“What is meant by inviting to Paradise is inviting to its cause, which is obedience to the Imam. Likewise, Ammar was calling them to obedience to Ali, who was the Imam whose obedience was obligatory at that time, while they were calling to the opposite of that.”

Reference:

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Fath al-Bari.

Status:

Sunni hadith commentary.

Comment:

This is extremely important.

Ibn Hajar says Imam Ali a.s was:

الإمام الواجب الطاعة إذ ذاك

“The Imam whose obedience was obligatory at that time.”

So Ammar was calling people to the rightful Imam.

Muawiya’s side was calling to the opposite.

Core narration 7: Ibn Kathir says Ali was on truth and Muawiya was rebellious

English:

“The people of Syria killed him, and by that the secret of what the Messenger ﷺ foretold became clear — that the rebellious group would kill him. By that it became clear that Ali was upon truth and Muawiya was rebellious, and in that are signs of Prophethood.”

Reference:

Ibn Kathir, al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah, events of Siffin, year 37 AH.

Status:

Sunni historical commentary.

Comment:

Ibn Kathir’s words are direct:

عليا محق

“Ali was upon truth.”

“Muawiya was rebellious.”

This is not Shia emotion.

This is a Sunni historian explaining a sahih hadith.

Core narration 8: Ibn Kathir says Ammar was in Ali’s army and Muawiya’s Syrian side killed him

English:

“It is known that Ammar was in Ali’s army on the day of Siffin, and the companions/supporters of Muawiya from the people of Syria killed him. The one who directly undertook his killing was a man called Abu al-Ghadiyah.”

Reference:

Ibn Kathir, al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah.

Status:

Sunni historical commentary.

Comment:

Again, the facts are clear:

Ammar was in Ali’s army.

Muawiya’s side killed him.

The physical killer was Abu al-Ghadiyah according to this report.

Core narration 9: The killers disputed over Ammar’s head in Muawiya’s presence

English:

“I was sitting with Muawiya when two men entered disputing over the head of Ammar, each one saying: I killed him. Abdullah bin Amr said: Let one of you happily give it to the other, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The rebellious group will kill him.”

Reference:

Reported in Sunni hadith and historical discussions; also cited in explanations of the hadith of Ammar.

Status:

Supporting report.

Comment:

Two men from Muawiya’s side were arguing over Ammar’s head.

Each one wanted the credit for killing Ammar.

Then Abdullah bin Amr reminded them of the Prophet’s words:

تقتله الفئة الباغية

“The rebellious group will kill him.”

Core narration 10: Muawiya’s excuse

English:

“Did we kill him? Rather, Ali and his companions killed him; they brought him until they threw him between our spears or between our swords.”

Reference:

Reported in Sunni historical works after the killing of Ammar.

Status:

Historical report.

Comment:

This was Muawiya’s famous escape argument.

But think about it.

If this excuse is accepted, then no killer ever killed anyone.

Every murdered person “came” to the place where he was killed.

Core narration 11: Ibn Kathir rejects Muawiya’s excuse

English:

“This interpretation taken by Muawiya is far-fetched.”

Reference:

Ibn Kathir, al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah.

Status:

Sunni historical commentary.

Comment:

Even Ibn Kathir did not accept this excuse as strong.

He called it:

“far-fetched.”

Core narration 12: Ibn Hajar says the hadith is a sign of Prophethood and a virtue for Ali and Ammar

English:

“The hadith ‘Ammar will be killed by the rebellious group’ was narrated by a group of Companions... most of its routes are authentic or hasan. In this hadith is one of the signs of Prophethood, a clear virtue for Ali and Ammar, and a refutation of the Nasibis who claim that Ali was not correct in his wars.”

Reference:

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Fath al-Bari.

Status:

Sunni hadith commentary.

Comment:

Ibn Hajar says this hadith refutes the Nasibis who claim Imam Ali a.s was not correct in his wars.

So if someone uses excuses to hide Muawiya’s rebellion against Imam Ali a.s, he should first answer Ibn Hajar.

Core narration 13: Al-Dhahabi says the hadith is mutawatir

English:

“There are narrations on this topic from several Companions, so it is mutawatir.”

Reference:

Al-Dhahabi, Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’, biography of Ammar bin Yasir.

Status:

Sunni biographical / hadith statement.

Comment:

This is not one isolated narration.

Al-Dhahabi says the hadith is mutawatir.

Core narration 14: Report about the killer of Ammar being in the Fire

English:

“The killer of Ammar and the one who takes his belongings is in the Fire.”

Reference:

Reported from Amr bin al-‘As; quoted by al-Dhahabi in Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’ under Abu al-Ghadiyah.

Status:

Supporting report. Al-Dhahabi noted weakness/interruption in its chain, so this is not the main proof.

Comment:

The main proof is already enough:

Sahih al-Bukhari.

Sahih Muslim.

Ammar was killed by the rebellious group.

Final question:

Who was Ammar with?

Imam Ali a.s.

Who killed Ammar?

Muawiya’s side.

What did the Prophet call Ammar’s killer group?

“The rebellious group.”

What did Ibn Hajar say?

Ali was correct in that war because Muawiya’s supporters killed Ammar.

What did Ibn Kathir say?

Ali was upon truth and Muawiya was rebellious.

So stop hiding behind selective history.

Stop calling every crime “ijtihad.”

Stop pretending both sides were equal when the Prophet himself gave Ammar as a sign.

Qur’an says:

English:

“And if two groups of believers fight, then make peace between them. But if one of them rebels against the other, then fight the one that rebels until it returns to the command of Allah.”

Reference:

Qur’an 49:9

And the Prophet said:

English:

“The rebellious group will kill Ammar.”

Reference:

Sahih Muslim.

Ammar bin Yasir was the test.

He stood with Imam Ali a.s.

He died at Siffin.

And the Prophet had already told the Ummah who his killers would be.

The treaty of Imam Hasan a.s stopped future bloodshed.

It did not turn the rebellious group into the righteous side.

It did not erase Ammar’s blood.

It did not cancel the words of the Prophet.
