Fabricated virtues of the Sahabah, Umayyad counter-narrations, and the truth they could not bury about Imam Ali a.s
Before anyone uses “virtues of Sahabah” to bury Imam Ali a.s and Ahl al-Bayt, first answer one honest question:
Were all these virtue narrations politically neutral?
Or were many of them produced in the Umayyad period to counter the virtues of Imam Ali a.s and Banu Hashim?
This is not Shia emotion.
This is admitted in classical historical and hadith-critical sources.
The real claim is not:
“All virtues of all Sahabah are fake.”
The real claim is:
Many narrations in the virtues of Sahabah were fabricated in a political atmosphere, especially to oppose Imam Ali a.s, Ahl al-Bayt, and Banu Hashim.
First testimony:
Ibn Abi al-Hadid quotes Ibn ‘Arafah, known as Niftawayh, saying:
Translation:
“Most of the fabricated hadiths in the virtues of the Sahabah were invented during the days of Banu Umayyah, to draw close to them, through what they thought would humiliate Banu Hashim.”
Reference:
Ibn Abi al-Hadid, Sharh Nahj al-Balaghah, quoting Ibn ‘Arafah / Niftawayh.
Read the words carefully.
“Virtues of the Sahabah.”
“During the days of Banu Umayyah.”
“To humiliate Banu Hashim.”
So this was not innocent religious love.
It was political narration-making.
It was anti-Banu Hashim propaganda.
It was a project to counter the household of the Prophet ﷺ.
Second testimony:
Al-Mada’ini records the actual mechanism.
He reports that Muawiya wrote to his governors after the Year of Unity:
أن برئت الذمة ممن روى شيئا من فضل أبي تراب وأهل بيته
Translation:
“Protection is removed from anyone who narrates anything from the virtue of Abu Turab and his Ahl al-Bayt.”
Reference:
Al-Mada’ini, Kitab al-Ahdath, quoted by Ibn Abi al-Hadid in Sharh Nahj al-Balaghah.
Abu Turab means Imam Ali a.s.
So first, the virtues of Imam Ali a.s and Ahl al-Bayt were suppressed.
Then the next stage came.
Muawiya ordered his governors to promote narrations in the virtues of Uthman and reward those who narrated them.
The report says:
Translation:
“They did that until they greatly increased reports about the virtues and merits of Uthman.”
Reference:
Al-Mada’ini, Kitab al-Ahdath, quoted by Ibn Abi al-Hadid.
Then when reports about Uthman became widespread, Muawiya moved to the next stage.
He ordered:
Translation:
“Call the people to narrate the virtues of the Sahabah and the first caliphs, and do not leave any report narrated by any Muslim about the virtue of Abu Turab except that you bring me something opposite to it regarding the Sahabah.”
Reference:
Al-Mada’ini, Kitab al-Ahdath, quoted by Ibn Abi al-Hadid.
This is the core point.
It was not just “virtues.”
It was counter-virtues.
A virtue of Imam Ali a.s?
Bring something opposite to it.
A report about Abu Turab?
Produce a counter-report about the Sahabah.
Ahl al-Bayt being praised?
Shift attention somewhere else.
This is why later polemicists become uncomfortable whenever the authentic virtues of Imam Ali a.s are mentioned.
Their inherited framework was built in a political environment where Ali’s virtues were being suppressed and countered.
The same report says:
فرويت أخبار كثيرة في مناقب الصحابة مفتعلة لا حقيقة لها
Translation:
“So many reports were narrated in the merits of the Sahabah, fabricated, having no reality.”
Reference:
Al-Mada’ini, Kitab al-Ahdath, quoted by Ibn Abi al-Hadid.
This sentence alone destroys the blind use of later “virtue narrations.”
“Many reports.”
“In the merits of the Sahabah.”
“Fabricated, having no reality.”
The report continues that these narrations were spread on pulpits, handed to teachers, and taught to children until they learned them like Qur’an.
This is how propaganda becomes religion.
First the ruler orders it.
Then the pulpit repeats it.
Then the teacher teaches it.
Then the child grows up thinking it is sacred truth.
Third testimony:
Ibn al-Qayyim himself admits that ignorant people who claimed Sunnism fabricated virtues.
He says:
Translation:
“Among what the ignorant people who attributed themselves to Sunnah fabricated regarding the virtues of al-Siddiq...”
Reference:
Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Manar al-Munif.
Then he gives examples of fabricated Abu Bakr virtue reports, including:
إن الله يتجلى للناس عامة يوم القيامة ولأبي بكر خاصة
Translation:
“Allah will manifest Himself to people generally on the Day of Judgment, and to Abu Bakr specifically.”
And:
Translation:
“Allah did not pour anything into my chest except that I poured it into Abu Bakr’s chest.”
And:
Translation:
“When the Prophet longed for Paradise, he kissed Abu Bakr’s grey hair.”
And:
Translation:
“Abu Bakr and I are like two racehorses.”
Reference:
Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Manar al-Munif.
So do not pretend fabricated virtues only exist in Shia books.
Sunni hadith critics themselves admitted that people claiming Sunnism fabricated virtue narrations.
Fourth testimony:
Ibn al-Qayyim also says regarding Muawiya:
ومن ذلك ما وضعه بعض جهلة أهل السنة في فضائل معاوية بن أبي سفيان
Translation:
“Among that is what some ignorant people of Ahl al-Sunnah fabricated regarding the virtues of Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan.”
Reference:
Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Manar al-Munif.
Then he quotes Ishaq ibn Rahwayh:
لا يصح في فضائل معاوية بن أبي سفيان عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم شيء
Translation:
“Nothing authentic is established from the Prophet ﷺ regarding the virtues of Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan.”
Reference:
Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Manar al-Munif.
This is not a Shia statement.
This is Sunni hadith criticism.
Specific virtues of Muawiya were fabricated.
And why?
Because Muawiya was the man who fought Imam Ali a.s.
Fifth testimony:
Ibn Hajar explains the politics behind praising Muawiya against Imam Ali a.s.
He records from Ibn al-Jawzi through Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal that Imam Ahmad was asked about Ali and Muawiya.
Imam Ahmad replied:
Translation:
“Know that Ali had many enemies. His enemies searched for a fault in him but could not find one. So they turned to a man who had fought him and exaggerated his praise as a plot against Ali.”
Reference:
Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, Bab Dhikr Muawiya.
This is the whole argument in one sentence.
They could not find a fault in Imam Ali a.s.
So they exaggerated the praise of the man who fought him.
Not because Muawiya was equal to Ali.
Not because Muawiya was above Ali.
But as a plot against Ali.
“As a plot against Ali.”
Then Ibn Hajar says:
فأشار بهذا إلى ما اختلقوه لمعاوية من الفضائل مما لا أصل له
Translation:
“By this, he pointed to what they fabricated for Muawiya from virtues that had no basis.”
Reference:
Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, Bab Dhikr Muawiya.
Again, read it carefully.
“They fabricated virtues for Muawiya.”
“Which had no basis.”
Sixth testimony:
Ibn Hajar also says:
وقد ورد في فضائل معاوية أحاديث كثيرة لكن ليس فيها ما يصح من طريق الإسناد، وبذلك جزم إسحاق بن راهويه والنسائي وغيرهما
Translation:
“Many hadiths have come regarding the virtues of Muawiya, but none of them is authentic through the route of isnad. Ishaq ibn Rahwayh, al-Nasa’i and others were firm upon this.”
Reference:
Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, Bab Dhikr Muawiya.
So the matter is clear.
Many reports were narrated in Muawiya’s virtues.
But according to major Sunni hadith authorities, none of them is authentically established as a specific Prophetic virtue.
Now compare this with Imam Ali a.s.
Seventh testimony:
Ibn Hajar records:
Translation:
“Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Isma‘il al-Qadi, al-Nasa’i and Abu Ali al-Naysaburi said: No reports have come regarding any of the Sahabah with good chains more than what has come regarding Ali.”
Reference:
Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalani, Fath al-Bari, Kitab Fada’il al-Sahabah, Bab Manaqib Ali ibn Abi Talib.
This is a massive admission.
When the standard is “good chains,” the strongest virtue material among the Sahabah is for Imam Ali a.s.
Not Muawiya.
Not the Umayyads.
Imam Ali a.s.
Eighth testimony:
Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal said:
سمعت أبي يقول: ما لأحد من الصحابة من الفضائل بالأسانيد الصحاح مثل ما لعلي
Translation:
“I heard my father say: No one among the Sahabah has virtues with authentic chains like Ali.”
Reference:
Ibn al-Jawzi, Manaqib al-Imam Ahmad; also quoted in later Sunni compilations from Abdullah ibn Ahmad.
This is even stronger wording.
“With authentic chains.”
So when fabricated counter-narrations are removed, and only sanad is considered, Imam Ali a.s stands above them all in virtues.
Ninth testimony:
Imam Ahmad also said about Imam Ali a.s:
يا بني علي بن أبي طالب من أهل بيت لا يقاس بهم أحد
Translation:
“My son, Ali ibn Abi Talib is from a household with whom no one can be compared.”
Reference:
Reported from Abdullah ibn Ahmad in Manaqib al-Imam Ahmad and quoted in later Sunni compilations.
This is the Ahl al-Bayt point.
Imam Ali a.s is not merely one political figure among others.
He is from the household of the Prophet ﷺ.
A household with whom no one can be compared.
Tenth testimony:
Ibn Hajar explains why Ali’s virtues had to be spread.
He says:
Translation:
“Then there occurred regarding Ali what occurred, and another group emerged who fought him. Then the matter became severe: they disparaged him and made cursing him on the pulpits a practice... so Ahl al-Sunnah needed to spread his virtues.”
Reference:
Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, Bab Manaqib Ali ibn Abi Talib.
Read that again.
They fought him.
They disparaged him.
They cursed him on pulpits.
So Ahl al-Sunnah needed to spread his virtues.
This is Sunni testimony that Imam Ali a.s’s virtues were attacked, hidden, opposed, and politically buried.
Eleventh testimony:
The famous statement about Imam Ali a.s says:
ما أقول في شخص أخفى أعداؤه فضائله حسدا، وأخفى أولياؤه فضائله خوفا وحذرا، وظهر فيما بين هذين ما طبقت الشرق والغرب
Translation:
“What can I say about a person whose enemies hid his virtues out of envy, and whose followers hid his virtues out of fear and caution, yet between these two concealments, his virtues appeared and covered the East and the West.”
Reference:
Quoted in the introduction of al-Khwarizmi al-Hanafi’s Manaqib as the statement of “some virtuous scholar”; later works attribute similar wording to al-Khalil ibn Ahmad, al-Shafi‘i, or others.
This perfectly describes Imam Ali a.s.
His enemies hid his virtues because of jealousy.
His lovers hid his virtues because of fear.
Yet his virtues still filled the East and West.
So now put all testimonies together.
Niftawayh says most fabricated virtue reports of the Sahabah were invented in the Umayyad period to humiliate Banu Hashim.
Al-Mada’ini reports that Muawiya’s policy was to suppress the virtues of Abu Turab and Ahl al-Bayt.
Al-Mada’ini reports that counter-narrations were demanded against every virtue of Abu Turab.
Al-Mada’ini says many reports in the merits of Sahabah were fabricated and had no reality.
Ibn al-Qayyim admits ignorant people claiming Sunnism fabricated virtues of Abu Bakr.
Ibn al-Qayyim admits ignorant people of Ahl al-Sunnah fabricated virtues of Muawiya.
Ishaq ibn Rahwayh says nothing authentic is established from the Prophet ﷺ in the specific virtues of Muawiya.
Ibn Hajar says many reports came in Muawiya’s virtues, but none is authentic through isnad.
Ibn Hajar records that Ali’s enemies could not find a fault in him, so they exaggerated the praise of the man who fought him as a plot against Ali.
Ibn Hajar records that what they fabricated for Muawiya had no basis.
Ibn Hajar records that Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Isma‘il al-Qadi, al-Nasa’i, and Abu Ali al-Naysaburi said no Sahabi has more good-chain virtue reports than Ali.
Abdullah ibn Ahmad reports from Imam Ahmad that no Sahabi has virtues with authentic chains like Ali.
Imam Ahmad says Ali is from a household with whom no one can be compared.
Ibn Hajar records that Ali was fought, disparaged, and cursed on pulpits, so Ahl al-Sunnah needed to spread his virtues.
So what is the conclusion?
The conclusion is not that every Sahabi virtue is fake.
The conclusion is that politically manufactured virtue narrations were used to counter Imam Ali a.s and Ahl al-Bayt.
The conclusion is that Umayyad propaganda tried to bury Ali’s virtues by producing rival praises.
The conclusion is that the enemies of Ali could not defeat his truth, so they tried to inflate his opponents.
The conclusion is that when Sunni hadith standards are applied, Imam Ali a.s still has the strongest virtue material.
This is why the truth cannot be hidden.
They suppressed his virtues.
They cursed him on pulpits.
They threatened his lovers.
They rewarded counter-narrations.
They fabricated virtues for his opponents.
They tried to make the one who fought him look equal to him.
But after all of that, Sunni hadith masters still had to admit:
لم يرد في حق أحد من الصحابة بالأسانيد الجياد أكثر مما جاء في علي
“No reports have come regarding any of the Sahabah with good chains more than what has come regarding Ali.”
And Imam Ahmad’s wording is even stronger:
ما لأحد من الصحابة من الفضائل بالأسانيد الصحاح مثل ما لعلي
“No one among the Sahabah has virtues with authentic chains like Ali.”
This is the truth they could not bury.
Imam Ali a.s did not need fabricated virtues.
His real virtues were enough.
Ahl al-Bayt did not need state propaganda.
The Prophet ﷺ had already pointed the Ummah to them.
At Ghadir, the Prophet ﷺ said:
من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه
Translation:
“Whoever I am his master, Ali is his master.”
And in Hadith al-Thaqalayn, the Prophet ﷺ said:
إني تارك فيكم الثقلين: كتاب الله وعترتي أهل بيتي
Translation:
“I am leaving among you the two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my Ahl al-Bayt.”
So the Prophet ﷺ pointed to Qur’an and Ahl al-Bayt.
But later politics tried to replace that guidance with a counter-narrative.
They fabricated virtues to fight Ali’s virtues.
They cursed Ali on pulpits.
They suppressed his lovers.
They rewarded those who narrated against him.
They praised the man who fought him.
But the truth remained.
Because truth does not die when rulers hate it.
It only becomes clearer.
