FABRICATED VIRTUES OF THE SAHABAH, UMAYYAD COUNTER-NARRATIONS, AND THE HISTORICAL TESTIMONY REGARDING IMAM ALI (PEACE BE UPON HIM)
The Evidence from Classical Sunni Hadith and Historical Sources
The question is not whether every narration concerning every Companion is fabricated. The real question is whether political interests influenced the transmission of reports about the virtues of the Companions, particularly when those reports were used to counter the virtues of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) and the Ahl al-Bayt.
Classical sources preserve statements about fabricated virtue-narrations, suppression of reports concerning Imam Ali, attempts to produce counter-narrations, and the considerable number of reports about Ali transmitted through good chains of transmission.
The following evidence is drawn from classical historical works and Sunni hadith criticism. Historical reports are identified as such rather than automatically treated as authenticated Prophetic hadiths.
- NIFTAWAYH: FABRICATED VIRTUES OF THE SAHABAH DURING THE UMAYYAD PERIOD
Ibn Abi al-Hadid quotes Ibn ʿArafah, known as Niftawayh, in his historical discussion of the political treatment of Imam Ali and the Ahl al-Bayt.
English Translation:
“Most of the fabricated hadiths concerning the virtues of the Sahabah were invented during the days of Banu Umayyah to gain their favour, through what they thought would humiliate Banu Hashim.”
Reference:
Ibn Abi al-Hadid, Sharh Nahj al-Balaghah, vol. 11, pp. 46–47, quoting Ibn ʿArafah (Niftawayh).
Online source:
https://www.masaha.org/book/view/2800/page/45
The statement explicitly connects the fabrication of reports about the virtues of the Sahabah with the Umayyad political environment and the humiliation of Banu Hashim.
- AL-MADA'INI'S HISTORICAL ACCOUNT: SUPPRESSION OF THE VIRTUES OF IMAM ALI AND THE AHL AL-BAYT
Ibn Abi al-Hadid cites a historical account attributed to ʿAli ibn Muhammad al-Mada'ini in Kitab al-Ahdath. The account describes restrictions on transmitting the virtues of Imam Ali, favourable treatment of those who narrated the virtues of Uthman, and instructions to produce counter-reports concerning other Companions.
A. The restriction on narrating the virtues of Abu Turab and his household
English Translation:
“Muawiya issued a circular to his governors after protection had been withdrawn from anyone who narrated anything concerning the virtues of Abu Turab and his Ahl al-Bayt.”
Reference:
Al-Mada'ini, Kitab al-Ahdath, quoted in Ibn Abi al-Hadid, Sharh Nahj al-Balaghah, vol. 11, pp. 44–45.
Online source:
https://arabic.balaghah.net/sites/default/files/file/11.pdf
B. The promotion of reports concerning Uthman
The same historical account describes the preferential treatment given to people who transmitted reports about Uthman's virtues and merits.
English Translation:
“They did so until they greatly increased the reports concerning Uthman's virtues and merits, because of the gifts, clothing, grants and estates that Muawiya sent to them.”
Reference:
Al-Mada'ini, Kitab al-Ahdath, quoted in Ibn Abi al-Hadid, Sharh Nahj al-Balaghah, vol. 11, p. 45.
C. The instruction to produce counter-narrations against reports about Imam Ali
English Translation:
“Then he wrote to his governors that reports about Uthman had become numerous and widespread in every region. He instructed them: ‘When this letter reaches you, encourage people to narrate the virtues of the Sahabah and the earlier caliphs. Do not leave any report narrated by a Muslim concerning Abu Turab without bringing me a counter-report concerning the Sahabah. This is dearer to me, more pleasing to my eyes, and more effective in refuting the argument of Abu Turab and his followers than reports about Uthman's virtues and merits.’”

Al-Mada'ini, Kitab al-Ahdath, quoted in Ibn Abi al-Hadid, Sharh Nahj al-Balaghah, vol. 11, pp. 45–46.
Online source:
https://arabic.balaghah.net/sites/default/files/file/11.pdf
D. The account explicitly describes fabricated reports
English Translation:
“His letters were read to the people, and numerous reports concerning the merits of the Sahabah were narrated—reports that were fabricated and had no basis in reality.”
Reference:
Al-Mada'ini, Kitab al-Ahdath, quoted in Ibn Abi al-Hadid, Sharh Nahj al-Balaghah, vol. 11, p. 46.
E. The dissemination of these reports through pulpits and education
English Translation:
“People became eager to transmit reports of this kind until they proclaimed them from the pulpits. A large body of such material was passed to the teachers of elementary schools for their pupils and boys, who transmitted it and learned it as they learned the Qur'an. They even taught it to their daughters, women, servants and attendants, and this continued for as long as Allah willed.”
Reference:
Al-Mada'ini, Kitab al-Ahdath, quoted in Ibn Abi al-Hadid, Sharh Nahj al-Balaghah, vol. 11, p. 46.
F. The account describes penalties against those associated with Imam Ali
English Translation:
“Then he sent a circular to his governors throughout the lands, instructing them to identify anyone proven to love Ali and his Ahl al-Bayt, remove that person's name from the register, and cut off his stipend and provision.”
The account continues:
English Translation:
“He followed this with another circular: whoever you suspect of supporting these people, seize him and demolish his house.”
Reference:
Al-Mada'ini, Kitab al-Ahdath, quoted in Ibn Abi al-Hadid, Sharh Nahj al-Balaghah, vol. 11, p. 46.
These passages form part of a historical account transmitted by Ibn Abi al-Hadid from al-Mada'ini. They are not, by themselves, authenticated Prophetic hadiths, but they are relevant to the history of political control over the transmission of reports.
- IBN AL-QAYYIM: FABRICATED REPORTS CONCERNING ABU BAKR
Ibn al-Qayyim discusses reports fabricated by people who associated themselves with the Sunnah concerning the virtues of Abu Bakr.
English Translation:
“Among the reports fabricated by ignorant people who attributed themselves to the Sunnah are reports concerning the virtues of al-Siddiq.”
Reference:
Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Manar al-Munif fi al-Sahih wa al-Da'if, chapter 33, reports 239–242.
Online source:
Ibn al-Qayyim lists the following reports in this discussion.
Report 1
English Translation:
“Allah will manifest Himself to the people generally on the Day of Judgment, and to Abu Bakr specifically.”
Report 2
English Translation:
“Allah did not pour anything into my chest except that I poured it into Abu Bakr's chest.”
Report 3
English Translation:
“When the Prophet longed for Paradise, he would kiss Abu Bakr's grey hair.”
Report 4
English Translation:
“Abu Bakr and I are like two racehorses competing with one another.”
Reference for all four reports:
Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Manar al-Munif, chapter 33, reports 239–242.
These examples demonstrate that Ibn al-Qayyim explicitly identified certain reports about Abu Bakr's virtues as fabricated.
- IBN AL-QAYYIM: REPORTS CONCERNING MUAWIYA
Ibn al-Qayyim also addresses reports fabricated concerning Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan.
English Translation:
“Among these are reports fabricated by some ignorant people of Ahl al-Sunnah concerning the virtues of Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan.”
Reference:
Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Manar al-Munif, chapter 35, report 248.
He then quotes the hadith critic Ishaq ibn Rahwayh.
English Translation:
“Nothing is authentically established from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, specifically concerning the virtues of Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan.”
Reference:
Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Manar al-Munif, chapter 35, report 248.
Ibn al-Qayyim immediately clarifies the meaning of this criticism.
English Translation:
“I say: What he and the hadith scholars who made this statement meant is that no authentic hadith has been established specifically concerning his merits. Otherwise, whatever is authentically established concerning the Companions in general and Quraysh in general also includes Muawiya.”
Reference:
Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Manar al-Munif, chapter 35.
This qualification is important: the criticism concerns reports specifically establishing Muawiya's virtues, not every general report about the Companions or Quraysh that might include him.
- IBN HAJAR: THE EXAGGERATION OF MUAWIYA'S VIRTUES AS A PLOT AGAINST IMAM ALI
Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani records a statement attributed to Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal concerning Ali and Muawiya.
English Translation:
“Know that Ali had many enemies. His enemies searched for a fault in him but could not find one. So they turned to a man who had fought him and exaggerated his praise as a plot against Ali.”
Reference:
Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani, Fath al-Bari, Kitab Fada'il al-Sahabah, Bab Dhikr Muawiya, vol. 7. The report is attributed to Imam Ahmad through Abdullah ibn Ahmad and is also discussed by Ibn al-Jawzi.
Online source:
https://islamweb.net/ar/library/content/52/6838/
Ibn Hajar explains the implication of the statement.
English Translation:
“By this, he alluded to the virtues they fabricated for Muawiya, which had no basis.”
Reference:
Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, Bab Dhikr Muawiya, vol. 7.
Ibn Hajar further states:
English Translation:
“Many hadiths have been transmitted concerning the virtues of Muawiya, but none of them is authentic through the chain of transmission. Ishaq ibn Rahwayh, al-Nasa'i and others firmly maintained this.”
Reference:
Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, Bab Dhikr Muawiya, vol. 7.
The significance of this passage lies in the distinction between the quantity of reports and their authenticity. The existence of numerous narrations does not establish that those narrations possess sound chains.
- IBN HAJAR: THE GREATEST NUMBER OF REPORTS WITH GOOD CHAINS CONCERNING IMAM ALI
In his commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, Ibn Hajar records a statement attributed to Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Isma'il al-Qadi, al-Nasa'i and Abu Ali al-Naysaburi.
English Translation:
“Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Isma'il al-Qadi, al-Nasa'i and Abu Ali al-Naysaburi said: No Companion has had more reports concerning his virtues transmitted through good chains of transmission than Ali.”
Reference:
Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani, Fath al-Bari, Kitab Fada'il al-Sahabah, Bab Manaqib Ali ibn Abi Talib, vol. 7, around p. 88 in the online pagination.
Online source:
https://islamweb.org/ar/library/content/52/6728/
Ibn Hajar then explains the historical circumstances in which reports concerning Ali's virtues circulated.
English Translation:
“It seems that the reason for this was that Ali came later, disagreements arose during his time, and groups rebelled against him. This became a reason for the spread of his merits, as numerous Companions transmitted them in response to those who opposed him.”
Reference:
Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, Bab Manaqib Ali ibn Abi Talib, vol. 7.
The statement specifically concerns the number of reports transmitted through good chains. It should not be misrepresented as a claim that every individual report about Ali is authentic.
- IBN HAJAR'S FURTHER ACCOUNT: FIGHTING ALI, DISPARAGING HIM AND CURSING HIM FROM THE PULPITS
English Translation:
“Then events concerning Ali unfolded, and another group emerged that fought him. The matter subsequently became severe: they disparaged him and made cursing him from the pulpits a practice. The Khawarij joined them in their hatred of him and went further until they declared him an unbeliever. Thus, the people became three groups regarding Ali: Ahl al-Sunnah, the innovators among the Khawarij, and those who fought him from Banu Umayyah and their followers. Therefore, Ahl al-Sunnah needed to disseminate his virtues, and the number of transmitters increased because so many people opposed him.”

Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani, Fath al-Bari, Kitab Fada'il al-Sahabah, Bab Manaqib Ali ibn Abi Talib, vol. 7.
Online source:
https://islamweb.org/ar/library/content/52/6728/
For completeness, Ibn Hajar's passage concludes with a qualification expressing the Sunni position regarding the four caliphs.
English Translation:
“Otherwise, the reality is that each of the four possesses virtues which, when assessed by the measure of fairness, do not depart from the position of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah.”
Reference:
Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, Bab Manaqib Ali ibn Abi Talib, vol. 7.
This qualification belongs to Ibn Hajar's own presentation and should be read alongside, rather than omitted from, his statements about the number of reports concerning Ali and the historical opposition he faced.
- IMAM AHMAD'S STATEMENT PRESERVED BY AL-HAKIM
A separate wording attributed to Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal is recorded by al-Hakim.
English Translation:
“I heard Ahmad ibn Hanbal say: No Companion of the Messenger of Allah has had virtues narrated for him like those narrated for Ali ibn Abi Talib.”
Reference:
Al-Hakim al-Naysaburi, al-Mustadrak, vol. 3, p. 107, in the section on the virtues of Ali ibn Abi Talib. The report is transmitted through Muhammad ibn Mansur al-Tusi from Ahmad ibn Hanbal.
Online source:
https://ablibrary.net/book_content/b/2906/107?lang=ar
This is a distinct wording from the statement preserved by Ibn Hajar concerning reports transmitted through good chains.
- ABDULLAH IBN AHMAD: VIRTUES TRANSMITTED THROUGH AUTHENTIC CHAINS
Another wording attributed to Imam Ahmad is transmitted by his son Abdullah.
English Translation:
“I heard Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal say: I heard my father say: No Companion has virtues transmitted through authentic chains like Ali, may Allah be pleased with him.”
Reference:
Ibn al-Jawzi, Manaqib al-Imam Ahmad, p. 212, according to the edition cited in the earlier research. The page should be checked against the specific printed edition being used.
The wording here explicitly mentions authentic chains, whereas the statement quoted by Ibn Hajar uses the expression “good chains.”
- IMAM AHMAD ON THE HOUSEHOLD OF IMAM ALI
Another statement attributed to Imam Ahmad concerns the distinction of Ali's household.
English Translation:
“My son, Ali ibn Abi Talib belongs to a household with whom no one can be compared.”
Reference:
Reported from Abdullah ibn Ahmad in Manaqib al-Imam Ahmad and cited in later Sunni compilations. The exact page should be verified against the edition used.
The statement places Ali within the context of the Prophet's household rather than treating his standing as merely a matter of political competition among individuals.
- A STATEMENT ABOUT THE CONCEALMENT OF IMAM ALI'S VIRTUES
A well-known statement quoted in works concerning Ali's virtues describes the concealment of his merits by both opponents and supporters.
English Translation:
“What can I say about a person whose enemies concealed his virtues out of envy, and whose followers concealed his virtues out of fear and caution, yet between these two concealments his virtues emerged and spread throughout the East and the West?”
Reference:
Quoted in the introduction to al-Khwarizmi al-Hanafi's Manaqib, p. 8, in the cited edition. Similar versions are attributed in later works to different scholars; the attribution should therefore not be assigned confidently to a specific individual without checking the original edition.
- THE PROPHET'S STATEMENT AT GHADIR
English Translation:
“Whoever I am his mawla, Ali is his mawla.”
Reference:
Sunan al-Tirmidhi, hadith 3713; also transmitted in Musnad Ahmad. Al-Tirmidhi describes his route as hasan gharib.
Online source:

- HADITH AL-THAQALAYN: THE BOOK OF ALLAH AND THE AHL AL-BAYT
English Translation:
“I am leaving among you the two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my Ahl al-Bayt.”
A fuller wording transmitted in the hadith collections reads:
إني تارك فيكم ما إن تمسكتم به لن تضلوا بعدي، أحدهما أعظم من الآخر: كتاب الله حبل ممدود من السماء إلى الأرض، وعترتي أهل بيتي، ولن يتفرقا حتى يردا علي الحوض، فانظروا كيف تخلفوني فيهما
English Translation:
“I am leaving among you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray after me. One is greater than the other: the Book of Allah, a rope extended from heaven to earth, and my Ahl al-Bayt. They will not separate until they reach me at the Pool, so consider how you treat them after me.”

Sunan al-Tirmidhi, hadith 3788; also transmitted in Musnad Ahmad. Wording and assessments differ among the available routes.

CONCLUSION
These sources preserve several distinct kinds of testimony.
First, Ibn Abi al-Hadid transmits Niftawayh's statement that many fabricated reports concerning the virtues of the Sahabah originated during the Umayyad period to gain favour and humiliate Banu Hashim.
Second, Ibn Abi al-Hadid's account from al-Mada'ini describes restrictions on transmitting the virtues of Imam Ali and the Ahl al-Bayt, incentives for circulating reports concerning Uthman, instructions to produce counter-reports, and the dissemination of fabricated material through pulpits and education.
Third, Ibn al-Qayyim explicitly identifies fabricated reports concerning the virtues of Abu Bakr and Muawiya, while clarifying that the criticism of reports about Muawiya concerns his specifically attributed virtues.
Fourth, Ibn Hajar records the statement attributed to Imam Ahmad that Ali's enemies failed to find a fault in him and responded by exaggerating the praise of a man who had fought him. Ibn Hajar also records that no Companion had more reports concerning his virtues transmitted through good chains than Ali.
Finally, separate reports attributed to Imam Ahmad speak of the extent of Ali's narrated virtues, including the wording concerning authentic chains and the distinction of his household.
The historical report about Umayyad policy comes to us through al-Mada'ini as quoted by Ibn Abi al-Hadid; it should not be presented as though it were itself an authenticated Prophetic hadith. The statements attributed to Imam Ahmad and other scholars likewise need to be cited according to their individual sources and wording.
The central question remains: when reports concerning the virtues of the Sahabah were circulated in a politically charged environment, should their quantity alone determine their acceptance, or should each report be examined through its source, wording and chain of transmission?
The classical sources cited here make clear that this distinction mattered—and that the virtues of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) occupy a particularly prominent place in the transmitted literature.
