Mihriz bin Shihab al-Sa‘di al-Tamimi — Killed with Hujr bin Adi under Muawiya’s rule

Mihriz bin Shihab was not killed in a normal battlefield.

Sunni historical sources record that he was one of the companions/supporters of Imam Ali a.s, was arrested with Hujr bin Adi and his companions, sent toward Muawiya, and then killed at ‘Adhra near Damascus.

Core narration 1: Mihriz was brought to ‘Adhra with Hujr and was among those killed

English:

“Mihriz bin Shihab bin Mihriz — and it is also said: Muhayriz bin Sufyan bin Khalid bin Safar al-Minqarī al-Tamimi — was a Kufan Tabi‘i. He was brought to ‘Adhra with Hujr bin Adi and his companions. Some of them were killed and some were released, and Mihriz was among those who were killed.”

Ibn Manzur, Mukhtasar Tarikh Dimashq, biography of Mihriz bin Shihab.

Status:

Sunni biographical/historical report.

Comment:

This confirms that Mihriz was from the Hujr group and was among those executed at ‘Adhra.

Core narration 2: Khalifah bin Khayyat directly says Muawiya killed Hujr and Mihriz with him

English:

“Year 51 AH: The killing of Hujr bin Adi. In this year Muawiya bin Abi Sufyan killed Hujr bin Adi bin al-Adbar, and with him Mihriz bin Shihab, Qabisah bin Dubay‘ah bin Harmalah al-Qaysi, and Sayfi bin Fasil from Rabi‘ah. In this year Ka‘b bin ‘Ujrah died.”

Reference:

Khalifah bin Khayyat, Tarikh Khalifah bin Khayyat, events of year 51 AH.

Status:

Early Sunni historical report.

Comment:

This is one of the clearest wordings: “قتل معاوية بن أبي سفيان” — “Muawiya bin Abi Sufyan killed…” and Mihriz is named among those killed with Hujr.

Core narration 3: Ibn Kathir lists Mihriz among the seven killed at ‘Adhra

English:

“These are the names of those who were killed at ‘Adhra: Hujr bin Adi, Sharik bin Shaddad, Sayfi bin Fasil al-Shaybani, Qabisah bin Dubay‘ah al-‘Absi, Mihriz bin Shihab al-Minqarī al-Sa‘di, Kudam bin Hayyan, and Abd al-Rahman bin Hassan al-‘Anazi, who was sent to Ziyad and buried alive at Qass al-Natif. When they were killed, funeral prayer was offered over them and they were buried.”

Reference:

Ibn Kathir, al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah, events of year 51 AH.

Status:

Sunni historical report.

Comment:

Ibn Kathir confirms that Mihriz was one of the seven men killed at ‘Adhra with Hujr bin Adi.

Core narration 4: Tabari says Mihriz was among those sent to Muawiya

English:

“Naming those who were sent to Muawiya: Hujr bin Adi bin Jabalah al-Kindi... Kudam bin Hayyan, Abd al-Rahman bin Hassan al-‘Anazi from Banu Humaym, Mihriz bin Shihab al-Tamimi from Banu Minqar, and Abdullah bin Hawiyah al-Sa‘di...”

Reference:

Tarikh al-Tabari, events of year 51 AH.

Status:

Historical report.

Comment:

Tabari first shows that Mihriz was among the men sent to Muawiya in the Hujr case. Other Sunni reports then name him among those killed.

Core narration 5: Al-Zirikli identifies Mihriz as one of Imam Ali’s senior companions/supporters

English:

“Mihriz bin Shihab al-Sa‘di al-Tamimi: one of the senior companions/supporters of Ali. He was described as brave and of sound judgment. Muawiya killed him after Ziyad bin Abihi arrested him in Kufa with Hujr bin Adi.”

Reference:

Al-Zirikli, al-A‘lam, biography of Mihriz bin Shihab.

Status:

Biographical historical summary.

Comment:

Al-Zirikli clearly says Mihriz was from the senior supporters of Imam Ali a.s, brave, sound in judgment, arrested by Ziyad with Hujr, and killed by Muawiya.

Now ask honestly:

What was Mihriz bin Shihab’s crime?

He was from the companions/supporters of Imam Ali a.s.

He was arrested with Hujr bin Adi.

He was taken to ‘Adhra.

He was executed with the group that Sunni historians themselves list.

This was not a battlefield death.

This was political execution under Muawiya’s rule.

Qur’an says:

English:

“And whoever kills a believer deliberately, his recompense is Hell, abiding therein; Allah is angry with him, has cursed him, and has prepared for him a great punishment.”

Reference:

Qur’an 4:93

So do not use Imam Hasan a.s’s peace treaty to erase this blood.

The treaty was made to stop bloodshed.

It was not a certificate of innocence for the blood already spilled.
