Sunni Sources: Imam Ali Said We Had a Right to the Caliphate

Sunni Sources: Imam Ali Said We Had a Right to the Caliphate

July 21, 2026EN

Refuting the Sunni Claim:
“Ali a.s never claimed khilafat was his right.”

This claim is not correct according to Sunni sources themselves.

The issue is not whether Imam Ali a.s was angry over a small personal matter. The issue is that Sunni books preserve clear wording that Imam Ali a.s believed Ahl al-Bayt had a right/share in “the matter,” and Sunni commentary explains that “the matter” means khilafah.

So before anyone says, “If Ali a.s was appointed, why did he never object?” they should first answer their own books.

1. Sahih Muslim: Imam Ali a.s said Ahl al-Bayt had a right in the matter.

English:
“But you acted independently over us in the matter, while we considered that we had a right because of our closeness to the Messenger of Allah.”

Reference:
Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Jihad wa al-Siyar, Bab Qawl al-Nabi: La Nurath Ma Tarakna fa Huwa Sadaqah.

Short comment:
This is the central proof. Imam Ali a.s did not say, “We had no right.” He said: “We considered that we had a right.”

2. Sahih Muslim: Imam Ali a.s said they had a share in this matter.

English:
“But we used to think that we had a share in the matter; it was taken independently from us, so we felt something within ourselves.”

Reference:
Sahih Muslim, same report.

Short comment:
The wording is not emotional poetry. It is direct political language: “في الأمر نصيبا” — “a share in the matter.”

3. Sahih Bukhari: same meaning — “we saw a share for ourselves in this matter.”

English:
“But we saw that we had a share in this matter; it was taken independently from us, so we felt something within ourselves.”

Reference:
Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Maghazi, Bab Ghazwat Khaybar.

Short comment:
Bukhari and Muslim both preserve the same meaning: Imam Ali a.s believed Ahl al-Bayt had a share/right in the matter.

4. Ibn Hajar explains what “the matter” means.

English:
Meaning: “You did not consult us,” and what is meant by “the matter” is “the caliphate.”

Reference:
Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Fath al-Bari, commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Maghazi, Bab Ghazwat Khaybar.

Short comment:
This destroys the excuse that Ali a.s was only talking about land or inheritance. Ibn Hajar says clearly: “الأمر” means khilafah.

5. Ibn Hajar further explains that “our share” means share in this matter.

English:
“Because of our closeness” means because of our closeness to the Messenger of Allah, and “a share” means: we had a share in this matter.

Reference:
Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Fath al-Bari, same commentary.

Short comment:
The explanation connects the claim to Ahl al-Bayt’s closeness to the Prophet ﷺ. This is exactly the argument Shia make: the closest Ahl al-Bayt had the strongest right.

6. Sahih Bukhari: Imam Ali a.s did not give bay‘ah during those months.

English:
“And he had not given bay‘ah during those months.”

Reference:
Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Maghazi, Bab Ghazwat Khaybar.

Short comment:
If Ali a.s had no objection and saw no right for himself, why was the bay‘ah delayed for months?

7. Sahih Muslim: Imam Ali a.s’s delay from bay‘ah was publicly mentioned.

English:
“He mentioned the matter of Ali, his staying back from the bay‘ah, and the excuse that Ali had presented to him.”

Reference:
Sahih Muslim, same report.

Short comment:
The narration itself admits “تخلفه عن البيعة” — Ali a.s stayed back from the bay‘ah.

8. Sahih Bukhari: Bibi Fatimah s.a remained upset with Abu Bakr and Ali a.s buried her at night without informing Abu Bakr.

English:
“Fatimah became upset with Abu Bakr regarding that, so she abandoned him and did not speak to him until she died ... When she died, her husband Ali buried her at night and did not inform Abu Bakr.”

Reference:
Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Maghazi, Bab Ghazwat Khaybar.

Short comment:
This shows the dispute was not a tiny misunderstanding. The daughter of the Prophet ﷺ died while displeased, and Imam Ali a.s buried her privately.

9. Sahih Bukhari: Umar admitted that Ali a.s, Zubayr, and those with them separated from the Saqifah group.

English:
“Ali, al-Zubayr, and those with them separated from us, while the Muhajirun gathered with Abu Bakr.”

Reference:
Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Hudud, Bab Rajm al-Hubla min al-Zina idha Ahsanat, Umar’s sermon about Saqifah.

Short comment:
This refutes the claim of instant unanimous ijma. Umar himself said Ali a.s and Zubayr were not with them.

10. Sahih Bukhari: Umar called Abu Bakr’s bay‘ah a sudden matter.

English:
“The bay‘ah of Abu Bakr was only a sudden matter, and it was completed.”

Reference:
Sahih al-Bukhari, same Saqifah sermon.

Short comment:
A sudden political decision cannot be presented as a calm, complete consultation with Ahl al-Bayt.

11. Sahih Bukhari: Umar warned against giving bay‘ah without consultation.

English:
“Whoever gives bay‘ah to a man without consultation from the Muslims, neither he nor the one to whom he gave bay‘ah should be followed, lest both of them be killed.”

Reference:
Sahih al-Bukhari, same Saqifah sermon.

Short comment:
This is important: Umar himself condemned bay‘ah without proper consultation, while the same sermon describes Saqifah as sudden and says Ali a.s and Zubayr were separate from them.

12. Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: Ali a.s and Zubayr used to consult Fatimah s.a after Abu Bakr’s bay‘ah.

English:
“Ali and al-Zubayr used to enter upon Fatimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah, consult her, and review their matter.”

Reference:
Ibn Abi Shaybah, al-Musannaf, Kitab al-Maghazi, Ma Ja’a fi Khilafat Abi Bakr wa Siratihi.

Short comment:
This shows there was a separate Ahl al-Bayt position after Saqifah. Ali a.s, Zubayr, and Fatimah s.a were discussing “their matter.”

13. Sunni Maghazi report: Some Muhajirun were angry regarding Abu Bakr’s bay‘ah, including Ali a.s and Zubayr.

English:
“Some men from the Muhajirun became angry regarding the bay‘ah of Abu Bakr; among them were Ali and al-Zubayr.”

Reference:
Musa ibn Uqbah’s Maghazi material, quoted in Sunni historical works such as Subul al-Huda wa al-Rashad.

Short comment:
This supports what Bukhari already shows: the matter was not unanimous from the beginning.

14. al-Baladhuri: Ali a.s did not give bay‘ah until Fatimah s.a died after six months.

English:
“Ali did not give bay‘ah to Abu Bakr until Fatimah died after six months.”

Reference:
al-Baladhuri, Ansab al-Ashraf.

Short comment:
This supports the same delayed-bay‘ah meaning found in Bukhari and Muslim.

15. al-Baladhuri: same meaning as Sahih Muslim — Ahl al-Bayt saw a share in the matter.

English:
“But we used to think that we had a share in this matter, but it was taken independently from us.”

Reference:
al-Baladhuri, Ansab al-Ashraf.

Short comment:
This is another Sunni historical wording matching Sahih Muslim’s meaning.

16. al-Riyad al-Nadirah: several important figures stayed back from Abu Bakr’s bay‘ah.

English:
“Those who stayed back from the bay‘ah of Abu Bakr at that time included Ali ibn Abi Talib, al-Zubayr, Talhah, Salman, Ammar, Abu Dharr, al-Miqdad and others.”

Reference:
al-Muhibb al-Tabari, al-Riyad al-Nadirah fi Manaqib al-‘Asharah.

Short comment:
This weakens the popular claim that everyone immediately accepted Abu Bakr without objection.

17. al-Imamah wa al-Siyasah: Ali a.s is reported to have directly said, “I am more entitled to this matter than you.”

English:
“I am more entitled to this matter than you. I will not give bay‘ah to you, while you are more deserving of giving bay‘ah to me.”

Reference:
al-Imamah wa al-Siyasah, attributed to Ibn Qutaybah.

Short comment:
Even if someone debates this book, the meaning is already proven from Sahih Muslim: Ali a.s saw a right/share for Ahl al-Bayt in the matter.

18. al-Imamah wa al-Siyasah: Ali a.s challenged the Quraysh argument of closeness to the Prophet ﷺ.

English:
“You argued against the Ansar through closeness to the Prophet, and now you take it from us, the Ahl al-Bayt, by force?”

Reference:
al-Imamah wa al-Siyasah, attributed to Ibn Qutaybah.

Short comment:
This is a powerful logical argument. If Quraysh used closeness to the Prophet ﷺ against the Ansar, then Ahl al-Bayt had the strongest closeness of all.

19. Imam Ali a.s publicly reminded people of Ghadir at Rahbah.

English:
“Ali gathered the people in al-Rahbah and said to them: I ask by Allah everyone who heard what the Messenger of Allah said on the Day of Ghadir Khumm to stand.”

Reference:
Musnad Ahmad; also cited in later Sunni hadith discussions such as al-Silsilah al-Sahihah and Dorar’s hadith encyclopedia.

Short comment:
So the claim “Ali a.s never reminded people of Ghadir” is also false. Sunni sources say he gathered witnesses publicly.

20. Rahbah/Ghadir report: thirty people stood and testified.

English:
“So thirty people stood.”

Reference:
Musnad Ahmad route, cited in Sunni hadith discussions of Hadith al-Ghadir.

Short comment:
This was not private. It was a public appeal for testimony.

21. Rahbah/Ghadir report: The Prophet ﷺ first asked whether he was more entitled over the believers, then declared Ali a.s as mawla.

English:
“Do you know that I am more entitled to the believers than their own selves?” They said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Whoever I am his mawla, this man is his mawla. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him and oppose whoever opposes him.”

Reference:
Musnad Ahmad; Dorar, hadith explanation of the Rahbah narration.

Short comment:
The context is not ordinary friendship. The Prophet ﷺ first mentioned authority: “أولى بالمؤمنين من أنفسهم.”

22. Another Ghadir wording: The Prophet ﷺ said Ali a.s is wali of whoever the Prophet ﷺ is mawla.

English:
“Am I not more entitled to the believers than their own selves?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “Am I not more entitled to every believer than his own self?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “This is the wali of whoever I am his mawla. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him and oppose whoever opposes him.”

Reference:
Sunan Ibn Majah, hadith 116; Musnad Ahmad; cited by Dorar.

Short comment:
Again, the Prophet ﷺ begins with “awla” — authority — then connects it to Ali a.s.

23. Shura protest in Sunni manaqib literature: Ali a.s asked the council if Ghadir was said for anyone else.

English:
“I ask you by Allah: is there anyone among you, other than me, to whom the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Whoever I am his mawla, Ali is his mawla. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him and oppose whoever opposes him’?” They said: “By Allah, no.”

Reference:
Ibn al-Maghazili, Manaqib Ali, Munashadah Yawm al-Shura.

Short comment:
Even Sunni manaqib literature preserves that Imam Ali a.s used Ghadir as an argument in the Shura.

24. In the Shura protest, Ali a.s also reminded them of Hadith al-Thaqalayn.

English:
“Do you know that the Messenger of Allah said: I am leaving among you the two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my ‘Itrah. You will not go astray as long as you hold fast to them, and they will never separate until they return to me at the Pond?” They said: “By Allah, yes.”

Reference:
Ibn al-Maghazili, Manaqib Ali, Munashadah Yawm al-Shura.

Short comment:
Ali a.s did not only mention personal virtues. He connected his argument to Ahl al-Bayt’s religious authority.

25. In the Shura protest, Ali a.s reminded them of Manzilah.

English:
“Is there anyone among you, other than me, to whom the Messenger of Allah said: You are to me like Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me?” They said: “By Allah, no.”

Reference:
Ibn al-Maghazili, Manaqib Ali, Munashadah Yawm al-Shura.

Short comment:
This matters because Harun was Musa’s deputy among his people. The only thing excluded is prophethood.

26. In the Shura protest, Ali a.s reminded them that the Prophet ﷺ left his door open and closed others.

English:
“Do you know that the Messenger of Allah ordered your doors to be closed and my door to be left open, so you spoke about that, and the Messenger of Allah said: I did not close your doors nor open his door; rather Allah closed your doors and opened his door?” They said: “By Allah, yes.”

Reference:
Ibn al-Maghazili, Manaqib Ali, Munashadah Yawm al-Shura.

Short comment:
Ali a.s was reminding the council that his status was not ordinary; it was divinely chosen.

27. Ibn al-Athir: Umar admitted Quraysh disliked prophethood and khilafah being combined in Banu Hashim.

English:
“They disliked that prophethood and caliphate should be combined for you.”

Reference:
Ibn al-Athir, al-Kamil fi al-Tarikh, events of year 23 AH, dialogue of Umar ibn al-Khattab with Ibn Abbas.

Short comment:
This is not a quote from Ali a.s, but it proves the issue was known: Banu Hashim’s right to khilafah was a real political discussion.

28. Ibn Abbas replied that Quraysh should have chosen according to Allah’s choice.

English:
“If Quraysh had chosen for itself when Allah had chosen for it, then correctness would have been in its hand, neither rejected nor envied.”

Reference:
Ibn al-Athir, al-Kamil fi al-Tarikh.

Short comment:
This is a direct rejection of the Saqifah logic: Quraysh choosing for itself is not the same as Allah choosing.

Logical Refutation:

The Sunni claim says:
“Ali a.s never claimed khilafat was his right.”

But Sunni sources say:

1. Ali a.s delayed bay‘ah for months.
Sahih Bukhari says:

2. Ali a.s said Abu Bakr acted independently in the matter.
Sahih Muslim says:

3. Ali a.s said Ahl al-Bayt saw a right/share for themselves.
Sahih Muslim says:

4. Ibn Hajar explains that “the matter” means khilafah.
Fath al-Bari says:

5. Umar admitted Ali a.s and Zubayr were not with the Saqifah group.
Sahih Bukhari says:

6. Imam Ali a.s publicly reminded people of Ghadir.
Musnad Ahmad and other Sunni routes say he gathered people at Rahbah and asked witnesses of Ghadir to stand.

So the real question is not:
“Did Ali a.s ever claim khilafat was his right?”

He did.

The real question is:
Why are people hiding these Sunni narrations from the public?

Final Conclusion:

From Sahih Muslim:

“But you acted independently over us in the matter, while we considered that we had a right.”

From Sahih Bukhari/Muslim:
ولكنّا كنا نرى لنا في الأمر نصيبا

“But we used to think that we had a share in the matter.”

From Ibn Hajar:

“What is meant by the matter is the caliphate.”

This is enough.

The claim “Ali a.s never claimed khilafat was his right” is not just weak.

It is refuted by Sahih Muslim, Sahih Bukhari, and Fath al-Bari.
