Arabic:
علي مع القرآن والقرآن مع علي، لن يتفرقا حتى يردا علي الحوض.

English:
Ali is with the Qur’an, and the Qur’an is with Ali. They will never separate until they return to me at the Pond.

Arabic:
إن منكم من يقاتل على تأويل القرآن، كما قاتلت على تنزيله، قال أبو بكر: أنا هو يا رسول الله؟ قال: لا، قال عمر: أنا هو يا رسول الله؟ قال: لا، ولكن خاصف النعل، قال: وكان أعطى عليا نعله يخصفه.

English:
Among you is one who will fight over the interpretation of the Qur’an, just as I fought over its revelation. Abu Bakr said: Am I the one, O Messenger of Allah? He said: No. Umar said: Am I the one, O Messenger of Allah? He said: No, rather the one repairing the sandal. He had given Ali his sandal to repair.

Arabic:
كنا جلوسا ننتظر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فخرج علينا من بعض بيوت نسائه، قال: فقمنا معه، فانقطعت نعله، فتخلف عليها علي يخصفها، ومضى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ومضينا معه، ثم قام ينتظره وقمنا معه، فقال: إن منكم من يقاتل على تأويل هذا القرآن كما قاتلت على تنزيله. فاستشرفنا وفينا أبو بكر وعمر، فقال: لا، ولكنه خاصف النعل. قال: فجئنا نبشره، قال: فكأنه قد سمعه.

English:
We were sitting, waiting for the Messenger of Allah, then he came out to us from one of the houses of his wives. We stood with him, and his sandal broke, so Ali stayed behind repairing it. The Messenger of Allah went on and we went with him, then he stood waiting for him and we stood with him. He said: Among you is one who will fight over the interpretation of this Qur’an just as I fought over its revelation. We looked forward to it, and among us were Abu Bakr and Umar. He said: No, rather it is the one repairing the sandal. So we came to give him the glad news, and it was as if he had already heard it.

عن أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه قال: كنا قعودا ننتظر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فخرج إلينا من حجرة عائشة رضي الله عنها، فانقطعت نعله فرمى بها إلى علي عليه السلام، ثم جلس فقال: إن منكم لمن ليقاتلن على تأويل القرآن كما قاتلت على تنزيله، فقال أبو بكر رضي الله عنه: أنا، قال: لا، قال عمر رضي الله عنه: أنا، قال: لا، ولكنه خاصف النعل في الحجرة.

English:
Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri said: We were sitting, waiting for the Messenger of Allah. He came out to us from the chamber of Aisha. His sandal broke, so he threw it to Ali. Then he sat and said: Among you is one who will surely fight over the interpretation of the Qur’an just as I fought over its revelation. Abu Bakr said: Is it me? He said: No. Umar said: Is it me? He said: No, rather it is the one repairing the sandal in the chamber.

Arabic:
كنا ننتظر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فخرج علينا من بيوت بعض نسائه، فقمنا معه نمشي فقطع شسع نعله، فأخذها علي فتخلف عليها ليصلحها، وقام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ينتظره، ونحن قيام معه، وفي القوم يومئذ أبو بكر وعمر رضي الله عنهما، فقال: إن منكم لمن ليقاتلن على تأويل القرآن كما قاتلت على تنزيله، فاستشرف لها أبو بكر وعمر فقال: لا، ولكنه خاصف النعل، فأتيته لأبشره بما قيل له، وكأنه لم يرفع به رأسا كأنه شيء قد سمعه.

English:
We were waiting for the Messenger of Allah. He came out to us from one of the houses of his wives. We stood and walked with him. The strap of his sandal broke, so Ali took it and stayed behind to repair it. The Messenger of Allah stood waiting for him, and we stood with him. Among the people that day were Abu Bakr and Umar. He said: Among you is one who will surely fight over the interpretation of the Qur’an just as I fought over its revelation. Abu Bakr and Umar looked forward to it, but he said: No, rather it is the one repairing the sandal. So I came to Ali to give him the glad news of what had been said about him, but it was as if he did not raise his head for it, as though it was something he had already heard.

عن أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه قال: كنا جلوسا في المسجد فخرج علينا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وكأنما على رؤوسنا الطير، لا يتكلم أحد منا، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: إن منكم من يقاتل الناس على تأويل القرآن كما قاتلتهم على تنزيله، فقال أبو بكر رضي الله عنه: أنا هو يا رسول الله؟ قال: لا. قال عمر: أنا هو يا رسول الله؟ قال: لا، ولكنه خاصف النعل في الحجرة، فخرج علينا علي ومعه نعل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلح منها.

English:
Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri said: We were sitting in the mosque when the Messenger of Allah came out to us. It was as if birds were on our heads; none of us spoke. The Messenger of Allah said: Among you is one who will fight people over the interpretation of the Qur’an just as I fought them over its revelation. Abu Bakr said: Am I the one, O Messenger of Allah? He said: No. Umar said: Am I the one, O Messenger of Allah? He said: No, rather it is the one repairing the sandal in the chamber. Then Ali came out to us, with the sandal of the Messenger of Allah, repairing it.

Arabic:
قال علي: سلوني عن كتاب الله، فوالله، ما من آية إلا أني أعلم أبليل نزلت أم بنهار، أم في سهل أم في جبل.

English:
Ali said: Ask me about the Book of Allah. By Allah, there is no verse except that I know whether it was revealed by night or by day, in a plain or on a mountain.

Arabic:
شهدت عليا رضي الله عنه وهو يخطب ويقول: سلوني، فوالله لا تسألوني عن شيء يكون إلى يوم القيامة إلا حدثتكم به، وسلوني عن كتاب الله فوالله ما منه آية إلا وأنا أعلم بليل نزلت أم بنهار أم بسهل نزلت أم بجبل.

English:
I witnessed Ali delivering a sermon and saying: Ask me, for by Allah, you will not ask me about anything that will happen until the Day of Resurrection except that I will tell you about it. Ask me about the Book of Allah, for by Allah, there is no verse in it except that I know whether it was revealed by night or by day, in a plain or on a mountain.

Arabic:
شهدت عليا يخطب وهو يقول: سلوني فوالله لا تسألون عن شيء إلا أخبرتكم، وسلوني عن كتاب الله، فوالله ما من آية إلا وأنا أعلم أبليل نزلت أم بنهار، أم في سهل أم في جبل.

English:
I witnessed Ali delivering a sermon and saying: Ask me, for by Allah, you will not ask me about anything except that I will inform you. Ask me about the Book of Allah, for by Allah, there is no verse except that I know whether it was revealed by night or by day, in a plain or on a mountain.

Arabic:
قال ابن عباس: ما أخذت من تفسير القرآن، فعن علي بن أبي طالب.

English:
Ibn Abbas said: What I took from the tafsir of the Qur’an, I took from Ali ibn Abi Talib.

11.

Arabic:
والله؛ ما نزلت آية إلا وقد علمت فيم نزلت، وأين نزلت، وعلى من نزلت، إن ربي وهب لي قلبا عقولا، ولسانا ناطقا.

English:
By Allah, no verse was revealed except that I knew regarding what it was revealed, where it was revealed, and about whom it was revealed. My Lord granted me an understanding heart and an articulate tongue.

Arabic:
قال علي رضي الله عنه: سلوني عن كتاب الله؛ فإنه ليس من آية إلا وقد عرفت بليل نزلت أم بنهار، أم في سهل أم في جبل.

English:
Ali said: Ask me about the Book of Allah, for there is no verse except that I know whether it was revealed by night or by day, in a plain or on a mountain.

Arabic:
لما توفي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أبطأ علي عن بيعة أبي بكر، فلقيه أبو بكر فقال: أكرهت إمارتي؟ فقال: لا، ولكن آليت لا أرتدي بردائي إلا إلى الصلاة حتى أجمع القرآن، فزعموا أنه كتبه على تنزيله، قال محمد: لو أصيب ذلك الكتاب كان فيه العلم.

English:
When the Messenger of Allah passed away, Ali delayed giving bay‘ah to Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr met him and said: Do you dislike my leadership? He said: No, but I swore that I would not wear my cloak except for prayer until I gather the Qur’an. They claimed that he wrote it according to its revelation order. Muhammad ibn Sirin said: If that book had been found, there would have been knowledge in it.

Arabic:
قال أبو جحيفة: سألت عليا رضي الله عنه: هل عندكم شيء مما ليس في القرآن؟ وقال مرة: ما ليس عند الناس؟ فقال: والذي فلق الحبة وبرأ النسمة ما عندنا إلا ما في القرآن إلا فهما يعطى رجل في كتابه وما في الصحيفة. قلت: وما في الصحيفة؟ قال: العقل وفكاك الأسير وأن لا يقتل مسلم بكافر.

English:
Abu Juhayfah said: I asked Ali: Do you have anything that is not in the Qur’an? And in another wording: something that people do not have? He said: By the One who split the seed and created the soul, we have nothing except what is in the Qur’an, except understanding that is given to a man in His Book, and what is in the scroll. I said: What is in the scroll? He said: Blood-money, freeing the captive, and that a Muslim is not killed for a disbeliever.

Arabic:
والله ما عندنا كتاب نقرؤه عليكم إلا كتاب الله وهذه الصحيفة.

English:
By Allah, we do not have any book that we recite to you except the Book of Allah and this scroll.

Arabic:
عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: إن الله علم رسوله الحلال والحرام والتأويل، فعلم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله علمه كله عليا.

English:
Imam al-Sadiq said: Allah taught His Messenger the lawful, the unlawful, and the interpretation. Then the Messenger of Allah taught all of his knowledge to Ali.

Arabic:
عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: إن الله تعالى علم رسوله القرآن، وعلمه أشياء سوى ذلك، فما علم الله رسوله فقد علم رسوله عليا.

English:
Imam al-Sadiq said: Allah taught His Messenger the Qur’an, and He taught him things besides that. So whatever Allah taught His Messenger, the Messenger taught Ali.

Arabic:
عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: كان علي عليه السلام يعلم كل ما يعلم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله، ولم يعلم الله رسوله شيئا إلا وقد علمه رسول الله أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام.

English:
Imam al-Sadiq said: Ali knew everything that the Messenger of Allah knew, and Allah did not teach His Messenger anything except that the Messenger of Allah taught it to Amir al-Mu’minin.

19.

Arabic:
عن حمران بن أعين قال: قلت لأبي عبد الله عليه السلام: جعلت فداك بلغني أن الله تبارك وتعالى قد ناجى عليا عليه السلام. قال: أجل، قد كان بينهما مناجاة بالطائف، نزل بينهما جبرئيل، وقال: إن الله علم رسوله الحلال والحرام والتأويل، فعلم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله عليا كله.

English:
Humran ibn A‘yan said: I said to Imam al-Sadiq: May I be sacrificed for you, it has reached me that Allah, Blessed and Exalted, privately conversed with Ali. He said: Yes. There was a private conversation between them at Ta’if; Jibril came down between them and said: Allah taught His Messenger the lawful, the unlawful, and the interpretation, then the Messenger of Allah taught all of it to Ali.

Arabic:
عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال: نزل جبرئيل عليه السلام على محمد صلى الله عليه وآله برمانتين من الجنة، فلقيه علي عليه السلام فقال له: ما هاتان الرمانتان اللتان في يدك؟ قال: أما هذه فالنبوة ليس لك فيها نصيب، وأما هذه فالعلم، ثم فلقها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله فأعطاه نصفها وأخذ نصفها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله، ثم قال: أما أنت شريكي فيه وأنا شريكك فيه. قال: فلم يعلم والله رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله حرفا مما علمه الله تعالى إلا علمه عليا عليه السلام.

English:
Imam al-Baqir said: Jibril came down to Muhammad with two pomegranates from Paradise. Ali met him and said: What are these two pomegranates in your hand? He said: As for this one, it is prophethood, and you have no share in it. As for this one, it is knowledge. Then the Messenger of Allah split it, gave half to him, and took half himself. Then he said: You are my partner in it and I am your partner in it. He said: By Allah, the Messenger of Allah did not know even one letter of what Allah taught him except that he taught it to Ali.

Arabic:
عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال: إن جبرئيل أتى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله برمانتين، فأكل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله إحداهما، وكسر الأخرى بنصفين، فأكل نصفها وأطعم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله عليا نصفها. ثم قال له رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: يا أخي، هل تدري ما هاتان الرمانتان؟ قال: لا. قال: أما الأولى فالنبوة ليس لك فيها نصيب، وأما الأخرى فالعلم أنت شريكي فيه. فقلت: أصلحك الله، كيف يكون شريكه فيه؟ قال: لم يعلم الله محمدا علما إلا أمره أن يعلمه عليا عليه السلام.

English:
Imam al-Baqir said: Jibril came to the Messenger of Allah with two pomegranates. The Messenger of Allah ate one of them and broke the other in two halves. He ate half and fed Ali the other half. Then the Messenger of Allah said to him: My brother, do you know what these two pomegranates are? He said: No. He said: The first is prophethood, and you have no share in it. The other is knowledge; you are my partner in it. I said: May Allah set you right, how is he his partner in it? He said: Allah did not teach Muhammad any knowledge except that He commanded him to teach it to Ali.

22.

Arabic:
عن أمير المؤمنين صلوات الله عليه قال: إن الله تبارك وتعالى طهرنا وعصمنا وجعلنا شهداء على خلقه، وحجته في أرضه، وجعلنا مع القرآن، وجعل القرآن معنا، لا نفارقه ولا يفارقنا.

English:
Amir al-Mu’minin said: Allah, Blessed and Exalted, purified us and protected us, made us witnesses over His creation and His proof on His earth, made us with the Qur’an and made the Qur’an with us. We do not separate from it, and it does not separate from us.

Arabic:
عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: نحن الراسخون في العلم ونحن نعلم تأويله.

English:
Imam al-Sadiq said: We are the firmly rooted in knowledge, and we know its interpretation.

24.

Arabic:
عن أحدهما عليهما السلام في قول الله عز وجل: وما يعلم تأويله إلا الله والراسخون في العلم، فرسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله أفضل الراسخين في العلم، قد علمه الله عز وجل جميع ما أنزل عليه من التنزيل والتأويل، وما كان الله لينزل عليه شيئا لم يعلمه تأويله، وأوصياؤه من بعده يعلمونه كله.

English:
From one of the two Imams regarding Allah’s saying: “And none knows its interpretation except Allah and those firmly rooted in knowledge”: The Messenger of Allah is the best of those firmly rooted in knowledge. Allah taught him all that He sent down to him of revelation and interpretation, and Allah would not send down anything to him without teaching him its interpretation. His successors after him know all of it.

Arabic:
عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: الراسخون في العلم أمير المؤمنين والأئمة من بعده عليهم السلام.

English:
Imam al-Sadiq said: The firmly rooted in knowledge are Amir al-Mu’minin and the Imams after him.

26.

Arabic:
عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: يا سدير، فهل وجدت فيما قرأت من كتاب الله عز وجل أيضا: قل كفى بالله شهيدا بيني وبينكم ومن عنده علم الكتاب؟ قال: قلت: قد قرأته جعلت فداك. قال: أفمن عنده علم الكتاب كله أفهم أم من عنده علم الكتاب بعضه؟ قلت: لا، بل من عنده علم الكتاب كله. قال: فأومأ بيده إلى صدره وقال: علم الكتاب والله كله عندنا، علم الكتاب والله كله عندنا.

English:
Imam al-Sadiq said: O Sudayr, have you also found in what you read from the Book of Allah: “Say: Allah is sufficient as a witness between me and you, and the one who has knowledge of the Book”? I said: I have read it, may I be sacrificed for you. He said: Is the one who has all the knowledge of the Book more understanding, or the one who has only some of the knowledge of the Book? I said: Rather, the one who has all the knowledge of the Book. He pointed with his hand to his chest and said: By Allah, all the knowledge of the Book is with us. By Allah, all the knowledge of the Book is with us.

27.

Arabic:
عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال في قول الله عز وجل: إنما أنت منذر ولكل قوم هاد، فقال: رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله المنذر، ولكل زمان منا هاد يهديهم إلى ما جاء به نبي الله صلى الله عليه وآله، ثم الهداة من بعده علي ثم الأوصياء واحد بعد واحد.

English:
Imam al-Baqir said regarding Allah’s saying: “You are only a warner, and for every people there is a guide”: The Messenger of Allah is the warner, and in every age there is a guide from us who guides them to what the Prophet of Allah brought; then the guides after him are Ali, then the successors one after another.

Arabic:
قال أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام: سلوني قبل أن تفقدوني، فوالذي فلق الحبة وبرأ النسمة، لو سألتموني عن أية آية في ليل أنزلت أو في نهار أنزلت، مكيها ومدنيها، سفريها وحضريها، ناسخها ومنسوخها، ومحكمها ومتشابهها، وتأويلها وتنزيلها لأخبرتكم.

English:
Amir al-Mu’minin said: Ask me before you lose me. By the One who split the seed and created the soul, if you asked me about any verse—whether it was revealed by night or by day, its Makki and Madani, its travel-related and resident-related, its abrogating and abrogated, its clear and ambiguous, its interpretation and revelation—I would inform you.

Arabic:
عن الأصبغ بن نباتة أن أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام قال في خطبة له: سلوني قبل أن تفقدوني، فو الذي فلق الحبة وبرأ النسمة، لو سألتموني عن أية آية لأخبرتكم بوقت نزولها، وفيم نزلت، وأنبأتكم بناسخها من منسوخها، وخاصها من عامها، ومحكمها من متشابهها، ومكيها من مدنيها.

English:
Al-Asbagh ibn Nubatah narrated that Amir al-Mu’minin said in one of his sermons: Ask me before you lose me. By the One who split the seed and created the soul, if you asked me about any verse, I would inform you of the time of its revelation, concerning what it was revealed, and I would inform you of its abrogating and abrogated, its specific and general, its clear and ambiguous, and its Makki and Madani.

30.

Arabic:
قال أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام: سلوني قبل أن تفقدوني، فوالذي فلق الحبة وبرأ النسمة إني لأعلم بالتوراة من أهل التوراة، وإني لأعلم بالإنجيل من أهل الإنجيل، وإني لأعلم بالقرآن من أهل القرآن.

English:
Amir al-Mu’minin said: Ask me before you lose me. By the One who split the seed and created the soul, I know the Torah better than the people of the Torah, I know the Gospel better than the people of the Gospel, and I know the Qur’an better than the people of the Qur’an.

Arabic:
قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله لعلي عليه السلام: تقاتل يا علي على تأويل القرآن كما قاتلت على تنزيله.

English:
The Messenger of Allah said to Ali: O Ali, you will fight over the interpretation of the Qur’an just as I fought over its revelation.

32.

Arabic:
قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: ألا وإن علي بن أبي طالب أخي ووصيي، يقاتل بعدي على تأويل القرآن كما قاتلت على تنزيله.

English:
The Messenger of Allah said: Indeed, Ali ibn Abi Talib is my brother and my successor; after me he will fight over the interpretation of the Qur’an just as I fought over its revelation.
