If Karbala had nothing to do with the political choices of some “respected” figures, then why did some Sunni scholars warn people not to narrate the killing of Imam Hussain a.s?
Why hide Karbala?
Why keep people away from Azadari?
Why blame everything on “the Kufans” only?
The real question is not only: “Who physically killed Imam Hussain a.s?”
The deeper question is:
When the Master of the youth of Paradise refused Yazid’s bay‘ah, how did others accept Yazid’s bay‘ah?
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Husain is from me, and I am from Husain. Allah loves whoever loves Husain.”
Reference: Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3775. Imam al-Tirmidhi said: Hasan.
The Prophet ﷺ also said:
الْحَسَنُ وَالْحُسَيْنُ سَيِّدَا شَبَابِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ
“Hasan and Husain are the chiefs of the youth of Paradise.”
Reference: Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3768; Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 118.
Now ask honestly:
If the chief of the youth of Paradise refused Yazid, then what does it mean when others treated Yazid’s rule as legitimate?
In Sahih al-Bukhari, when the people of Madinah rejected Yazid ibn Muawiyah, Abdullah ibn Umar gathered his family and said:
وَإِنَّا قَدْ بَايَعْنَا هَذَا الرَّجُلَ عَلَى بَيْعِ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ
“And we have given bay‘ah to this man upon the bay‘ah of Allah and His Messenger.”
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Fitan, Hadith 7111.
“This man” was Yazid ibn Muawiyah.
So the question is very simple:
If Imam Hussain a.s was wrong to refuse Yazid, then why do Sunnis call him the beloved grandson of the Prophet ﷺ and the chief of Paradise’s youth?
And if Imam Hussain a.s was right to refuse Yazid, then why are those who legitimized Yazid protected from criticism?
This is why Karbala is dangerous for the fake version of history.
Because Karbala exposes the difference between Islam of the Prophet’s Ahl al-Bayt and the Islam of political power.
This is why some scholars said people should not narrate Maqtal al-Hussain.
Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali is quoted as saying:
يحرم على الواعظ وغيره رواية مقتل الحسين وحكايته وما جرى بين الصحابة من التشاجر والتخاصم؛ فإنه يهيج بغض الصحابة والطعن فيهم، وهم أعلام الدين
“It is forbidden for the preacher and others to narrate the killing of Hussain and what happened among the Sahaba of quarrelling and dispute, because it stirs hatred against the Sahaba and criticism of them, while they are the symbols of religion.”
Reference: Ismail Haqqi, Tafsir Ruh al-Bayan, under Surah Hud 11:48, vol. 4, p. 89.
Ibn Hajar al-Haytami also quoted:
قال الغزالي وغيره ويحرم على الواعظ وغيره رواية مقتل الحسين وحكاياته وما جرى بين الصحابة من التشاجر والتخاصم فإنه يهيج على بغض الصحابة والطعن فيهم
“Al-Ghazali and others said: It is forbidden for the preacher and others to narrate the killing of Hussain and its reports, and what occurred among the Sahaba of quarrelling and dispute, because it stirs hatred against the Sahaba and criticism of them.”
Reference: Ibn Hajar al-Haytami, al-Sawa‘iq al-Muhriqah, vol. 2, p. 640.
This is the confession.
They knew that if Karbala is narrated honestly, people will ask questions.
They knew that the blood of Imam Hussain a.s will not allow political excuses to survive.
They knew that the public will ask:
Who made Yazid powerful?
Who gave his rule legitimacy?
Who stayed silent?
Who blamed only Kufa while protecting the political system that demanded Hussain’s bay‘ah?
Blaming “Kufans” alone is an escape route.
Yes, Kufans betrayed. Yes, Kufans wrote letters. Yes, many Kufans failed.
But Yazid was not a Kufan.
Ibn Ziyad was not acting as an independent street criminal.
The demand for bay‘ah did not come from random Kufans.
The political throne was in Damascus.
The army acted under the Umayyad state.
The head of Imam Hussain a.s was taken to the rulers, not to some anonymous crowd.
So why is the blame always pushed downward to “Kufans,” while the system above them is protected?
Because if people understand Karbala, they will understand why Shia mourn.
Azadari is not just crying.
Azadari is historical memory.
Azadari is refusing to let the oppressed be buried under political excuses.
Azadari is asking the question they do not want the public to ask:
When Hussain a.s stood against Yazid, where did everyone else stand?
This is why Karbala is hidden.
Not because Karbala creates hatred.
But because Karbala exposes truth.
