Was Aisha Nine or Married Before the Prophet? Sunni Sources

Sunni popular preaching repeatedly presents Aisha as nine years old, while Sunni hadith and historical books themselves preserve evidence that she was considerably older and had a formal marital arrangement—described in some reports as marriage followed by divorce—with Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim before her marriage to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The honour of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ should not be made dependent upon one disputed historical chronology while contrary Sunni evidence is pushed into the background.

1. Aisha remembered an early Meccan revelation

English:

“This was revealed to Muhammad ﷺ in Mecca while I was a young girl playing:

‘Rather, the Hour is their appointed time, and the Hour is more disastrous and bitter.’”

Reference:

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 4876, Kitab al-Tafsir, commentary on Surah al-Qamar.

Status:

Sahih.

Short comment:

Aisha personally remembered herself as a young girl when this verse was revealed in Mecca.

Al-Qurtubi records:

English:

“Ibn Abbas said: There were seven years between the revelation of this verse and Badr.”

Reference:

Al-Qurtubi, al-Jamiʿ li-Ahkam al-Qur’an, commentary on Surah al-Qamar 54:45–46.

Short comment:

Badr occurred in 2 AH, placing this revelation approximately five years before the Hijrah.

According to the age-nine chronology, Aisha would have been only approximately three or four years old when the verse was revealed. Her conscious recollection fits the older-age chronology far more naturally.

2. Aisha remembered the early persecution in Mecca

English:

“I never consciously knew my parents except that they both followed the religion. Not a day passed without the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visiting us at both ends of the day, morning and evening. When the Muslims were persecuted, Abu Bakr departed intending to migrate toward the land of Abyssinia.”

Reference:

Sahih al-Bukhari, narration of Aisha concerning Abu Bakr, Ibn al-Daghinnah and the attempted migration toward Abyssinia.

Status:

Sahih.

Short comment:

The phrase “I never consciously knew my parents” describes Aisha’s own childhood awareness during the early Meccan period.

If she was born several years after Prophethood began, she would have been an infant or barely a toddler during these events. The narration fits birth before Prophethood much more naturally.

3. Aisha was counted among the earliest Muslims

English:

“Aisha accepted Islam while young, after eighteen people had accepted Islam.”

Reference:

Al-Nawawi, Tahdhib al-Asmaʾ wa al-Lughat, biography of Aisha, transmitting from Abu Bakr ibn Abi Khaythamah, from Ibn Ishaq.

Short comment:

Ibn Ishaq placed Aisha among the earliest Muslims. This is difficult to reconcile with the claim that she had not yet been born during the earliest years of the Prophetic mission.

4. Asma was ten years older than Aisha

English:

“In Tarikh Dimashq, Ibn Abi al-Zinad said: Asma was ten years older than Aisha.”

Al-Nawawi also records:

English:

“Al-Hafiz Abu Nuʿaym said: Asma was born twenty-seven years before the migration of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”

References:

Al-Nawawi, Tahdhib al-Asmaʾ wa al-Lughat, biography of Asma bint Abi Bakr.

Ibn ʿAsakir, Tarikh Dimashq.

Abu Nuʿaym, Maʿrifat al-Sahabah.

Short comment:

The calculation from these Sunni reports is simple:

Asma was approximately twenty-seven at the Hijrah.

Aisha was approximately ten years younger.

Therefore, Aisha was approximately seventeen at the Hijrah.

If she entered the Prophet’s household in late 1 AH, she was approximately seventeen to eighteen.

If this occurred after Badr in 2 AH, she was approximately eighteen to nineteen.

The figures may be approximate, but this Sunni chronology places her far above the age of nine.

5. Sunni hadith scholar Salah al-Din al-Idlibi’s conclusion

English:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ contracted his marriage with Aisha when she was fourteen, and entered marriage with her when she was seventeen and approaching eighteen.”

Reference:

Salah al-Din al-Idlibi, research concerning Aisha’s age at marriage.

Short comment:

After comparing the Sunni historical evidence, al-Idlibi concluded that Aisha was approximately fourteen at the marriage contract and nearly eighteen when she entered the Prophet’s household.

Therefore, the older-age position is not merely a Shia claim. It has also been defended by a Sunni hadith scholar using Sunni sources.

6. A hasan Sunni report confirms Aisha’s previous marital arrangement

English:

“Muṭʿim ibn ʿAdi had already mentioned her for his son, and by Allah, Abu Bakr had never broken a promise.”

Reference:

Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 25769.

Al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-Kubra, Hadith 13863.

Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 4937, abbreviated wording.

Grading:

Shuʿayb al-Arnaʾut: إسناده حسن — “Its chain is hasan.”

Short comment:

This was not a casual proposal. Both families treated the arrangement as binding enough that Abu Bakr personally went to Muṭʿim’s household to settle it before accepting the Prophet’s proposal.

This hasan narration independently confirms that Aisha had a formal pre-existing marital arrangement with Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim.

7. Ibn Saʿd records Aisha’s marriage followed by divorce

English:

Abu Bakr said:

“I had given her to Muṭʿim for his son Jubayr….”

He then obtained her release from them, Jubayr divorced her, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married her.

Reference:

Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat al-Kubra, vol. 8, pp. 58–59, report 9584, biography of Aisha.

Chain:

ʿAbd Allah ibn Numayr, from al-Ajlah ibn ʿAbd Allah, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Mulaykah.

Short comment:

The report does not merely say that Jubayr proposed to Aisha.

It says:

“I had given her.”

It then says:

“He divorced her.”

The report is mursal and therefore cannot be called an undisputed sahih narration. However, it is an early Sunni historical report, and its basic event is independently supported by the hasan narration in Musnad Ahmad and al-Bayhaqi.

8. Al-Tabarani explicitly records that Abu Bakr had married Aisha to Jubayr

English:

“Abu Bakr had married her to Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim. He then obtained her separation from him and married her to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”

Reference:

Al-Tabarani, al-Muʿjam al-Kabir, vol. 23, p. 26, report 62.

Short comment:

The Arabic wording is explicit:

قَدْ زَوَّجَهَا جُبَيْرَ

“He had married her to Jubayr.”

The report shares the lower chain of al-Ajlah from Ibn Abi Mulaykah and is mursal. However, explicit marriage and separation wording remains preserved inside a major Sunni hadith collection.

9. Ibn al-Mulaqqin preserves the explicit divorce wording

English:

“I had promised her, or mentioned her, to Muṭʿim ibn ʿAdi for his son Jubayr.”

Ibn al-Mulaqqin then adds:

English:

“In another wording: Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim divorced her.”

Reference:

Ibn al-Mulaqqin, al-Tawdih li-Sharh al-Jamiʿ al-Sahih, Kitab al-Nikah, vol. 24, pp. 216–217.

Short comment:

A major Sunni commentator preserved both forms of the report:

A formal promise or marital designation.

A previous marriage ending in divorce.

The Evidence Sunni Polemics Rarely Present Together

The Sunni record contains the following evidence:

Sahih al-Bukhari records Aisha’s conscious memories of an early Meccan revelation and persecution.

Ibn Ishaq places her among the earliest Muslims.

Al-Nawawi records that Asma was ten years older than Aisha and that Asma was born twenty-seven years before the Hijrah.

This places Aisha approximately seventeen at the Hijrah and approximately seventeen to nineteen when she entered the Prophet’s household.

Sunni hadith scholar Salah al-Din al-Idlibi concluded that she was fourteen at the marriage contract and nearly eighteen when married life began.

A hasan Sunni narration confirms that Aisha had a formal pre-existing marital arrangement with Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim.

Ibn Saʿd records that she was given to Jubayr and that he divorced her.

Al-Tabarani records that Abu Bakr had married her to Jubayr and later obtained her separation.

Ibn al-Mulaqqin explicitly preserves the wording: “Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim divorced her.”

Despite all this, popular Sunni preaching usually repeats only “six at contract and nine at consummation” as though no competing Sunni evidence exists.

When enemies of Islam exploit the age-nine narration to slander the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, many Sunni polemicists defend the disputed number instead of honestly presenting all the evidence preserved in their own books.

They have repeated one chronology so widely that familiarity is treated as certainty, while reports supporting an older age and a previous marriage are rarely mentioned.

This is not the defence of the Prophet ﷺ.

The honour of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ comes before attachment to one disputed chronology.

Sunni sources themselves preserve a coherent case that Aisha was approximately seventeen to nineteen when she entered the Prophet’s household and that she had previously been married or formally contracted to Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim before being divorced or separated from him.
