PART 1: WHAT DOES “MOTHER OF THE BELIEVERS” REALLY MEAN?
Response to:
“What Does Mother of Believers Really Mean?”
https://www.twelvershia.net/2013/04/25/respone-to-what-does-mother-of-believers-really-mean/
What kind of mothers were the Prophet’s wives?
Did they carry the believers in pregnancy?
Did they give birth to them?
Did they breastfeed them?
Did their children become the brothers and sisters of every Muslim?
Did Muslims inherit from them as they inherit from their biological mothers?
And if the wives were literal mothers, why does the Qur’an declare that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is not the father of any of the believers’ men?
The answer is simple:
“Mother of the Believers” is not biological motherhood.
It is a restricted legal title whose central purpose is that the Prophet’s wives could never be married after him.
It does not prove infallibility.
It does not guarantee Paradise.
It does not make every action of a Prophet’s wife permanently correct.
1. THE QUR’AN DEFINES BIOLOGICAL MOTHERHOOD
Allah says:
“Mothers may breastfeed their children for two complete years.”
Qur’an 2:233
Allah also says:
“His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship.”
Qur’an 46:15
The believers were neither carried, delivered nor breastfed by the Prophet’s wives.
Therefore, Qur’an 33:6 cannot be speaking about biological motherhood.
2. THE QUR’AN SAYS A WIFE DOES NOT LITERALLY BECOME A MOTHER
In pre-Islamic Arabia, a man could abandon his wife through zihar by saying:
“You are to me like the back of my mother.”
Allah rejected this practice:
“He has not made your wives whom you declare to be like your mothers into your actual mothers.”
Qur’an 33:4
Allah states even more explicitly:
“They are not their mothers. Their mothers are only those who gave birth to them. They are certainly uttering a reprehensible statement and a falsehood.”
Qur’an 58:2
Al-Tabari explains that zihar was used as a form of separation during the Age of Ignorance.
Reference: Al-Tabari, Jami‘ al-Bayan, commentary on Qur’an 58:2.
Therefore, describing a wife as a “mother” does not make her a biological mother.
Qur’an 33:6 must be a special legal designation with a defined purpose.
3. PROPHET MUHAMMAD ﷺ IS NOT THE BIOLOGICAL FATHER OF THE BELIEVERS
Allah says:
“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last of the Prophets.”
Qur’an 33:40
If the Prophet’s wives became literal mothers of every believer, their husband would become the believers’ literal father.
But the Qur’an denies such biological or legal fatherhood.
The title therefore creates no genealogy, inheritance or ordinary family relationship.
4. IMAM AL-SHAFI‘I: THEY ARE MOTHERS “IN ONE MEANING, NOT EVERY MEANING”
Imam al-Shafi‘i said:
“They are their mothers in one meaning, not in every meaning. That is because marrying them is never lawful, while their daughters are not prohibited.”
Reference: Al-Mawardi, al-Hawi al-Kabir, quoting al-Shafi‘i.
This is explicit:
“They are their mothers in one meaning, not every meaning.”
What is that meaning?
“Marrying them is not lawful.”
Their daughters did not become the believers’ sisters.
Their brothers did not become the believers’ maternal uncles.
Their property was not inherited as a mother’s property.
This was restricted legal motherhood.
5. AL-BAGHAWI: THE MEANING OF THIS MOTHERHOOD IS THE PROHIBITION OF MARRIAGE
After narrating Aisha’s own explanation, al-Baghawi concludes:
“Through this, the meaning of this motherhood becomes clear: it is the prohibition of marrying them.”
Reference: Al-Baghawi, Ma‘alim al-Tanzil, commentary on Qur’an 33:6.
This is not a Shia interpretation.
It is a direct Sunni tafsir statement:
“It is the prohibition of marrying them.”
6. AL-TABARI GIVES THE SAME CORE MEANING
Allah says:
“His wives are their mothers.”
Qur’an 33:6
Al-Tabari explains:
“The sanctity of his wives upon the believers is like the sanctity of their mothers in that marrying them after his death is forbidden.”
Reference: Al-Tabari, Jami‘ al-Bayan, commentary on Qur’an 33:6.
Again, the defined legal effect is marriage prohibition.
7. QUR’AN 33:53 MAKES THE PURPOSE EXPLICIT
Allah says:
“It is not for you to hurt the Messenger of Allah, nor ever to marry his wives after him. Indeed, that would be an enormous matter in the sight of Allah.”
Qur’an 33:53
Qur’an 33:6 gives them the title of mothers.
Qur’an 33:53 explains the permanent consequence:
“Nor ever marry his wives after him.”
Calling them mothers removed the very thought of marriage from the believers’ minds.
8. AISHA HERSELF SAID SHE WAS NOT THE MOTHER OF WOMEN
A woman addressed Aisha:
“O mother!”
Aisha replied:
“I am the mother of your men; I am not your mother.”
Reference: Al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-Kubra, hadith 13552.
Al-Qastallani stated:
“It is authentically established from Aisha.”
Why did Aisha say she was the mother of men but not women?
Because men could theoretically marry the Prophet’s widows.
Women could not.
Therefore, Aisha herself connected the title with men and the legal question of marriage.
Al-Baghawi cited this report and concluded:
“The meaning of this motherhood becomes clear: it is the prohibition of marrying them.”
9. THE OTHER RULES OF BIOLOGICAL MOTHERHOOD DID NOT APPLY
Al-Alusi writes:
“As for matters beyond that—looking at them, being alone with them, inheriting from them and similar matters—they are like unrelated women.”
Reference: Al-Alusi, Ruh al-Ma‘ani, commentary on Qur’an 33:6.
The decisive words are:
“They are like unrelated women.”
Therefore, “Mother of the Believers” did not make them literal mothers.
It did not make every Muslim their mahram.
It did not permit seclusion with them.
It did not create inheritance.
It did not make their daughters the sisters of every believer.
It did not create infallibility.
10. APPROPRIATE RESPECT DOES NOT MEAN INFALLIBILITY
Some Sunni mufassirin add that the Prophet’s wives were entitled to appropriate respect because of their relationship with the Prophet ﷺ.
But respect is not infallibility.
Respect does not mean that every action is correct.
Respect does not mean that a wife cannot sin.
Respect does not mean that she cannot be corrected by Allah.
Respect does not mean automatic Paradise.
The Qur’an itself holds the Prophet’s wives personally accountable.
11. THE QUR’AN PROMISED REWARD ONLY TO THE DOERS OF GOOD AMONG THEM
Allah says:
“If you desire Allah, His Messenger and the Hereafter, Allah has prepared an enormous reward for the doers of good among you.”
Qur’an 33:29
The verse does not say:
“Every wife is guaranteed Paradise merely through marriage.”
It says:
“For the doers of good among you.”
The reward is linked with faith, obedience and righteous conduct.
12. THE PROPHET’S WIVES WERE THREATENED WITH DOUBLE PUNISHMENT
Allah says:
“O wives of the Prophet, whoever among you commits a manifest offence, her punishment will be doubled twice over, and that is easy for Allah.”
Qur’an 33:30
Al-Tabari explains:
“Her punishment for her wrongdoing in the Hereafter will be doubled.”
Reference: Al-Tabari, Jami‘ al-Bayan, commentary on Qur’an 33:30.
If marriage to the Prophet automatically guaranteed Paradise, why would Allah threaten his wives with double punishment in the Hereafter?
13. DOUBLE REWARD WAS CONDITIONAL UPON OBEDIENCE
Allah says:
“Whoever among you remains obedient to Allah and His Messenger and performs righteous deeds, We will give her reward twice.”
Qur’an 33:31
The formula is clear:
Wrongdoing: double punishment.
Obedience and righteous deeds: double reward.
The title itself is not the guarantee.
Conduct is the condition.
14. THEIR DISTINCTION WAS CONDITIONAL UPON TAQWA
Allah says:
“O wives of the Prophet, you are not like other women—if you are God-conscious.”
Qur’an 33:32
The condition is:
“If you are God-conscious.”
Their special distinction was connected with taqwa—not merely with being married to the Prophet.
15. AISHA AND HAFSA WERE ORDERED TO REPENT
Allah says:
“If you two repent to Allah, then your hearts have certainly inclined. But if you support one another against him, then Allah is his Protector, along with Gabriel, the righteous believers and the angels.”
Qur’an 66:4
Ibn Abbas asked Umar who these two wives were.
Umar replied:
“They were Aisha and Hafsa.”
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, hadith 5191.
Al-Baghawi explains:
“Your hearts have inclined, meaning they deviated and turned away from what was right, and you became obligated to repent.”
Reference: Al-Baghawi, Ma‘alim al-Tanzil, commentary on Qur’an 66:4.
This is decisive.
Aisha and Hafsa were wives of the Prophet and Mothers of the Believers.
Yet Allah ordered them to repent.
Their hearts were described as having inclined away from what was right.
Therefore, “Mother of the Believers” cannot mean always correct or incapable of wrongdoing.
16. ALLAH THREATENED TO REPLACE THEM WITH BETTER WIVES
Allah says:
“Perhaps, if he divorces you, his Lord will replace you with wives better than you—submissive, believing, obedient, repentant and worshipping.”
Qur’an 66:5
Allah said that other women could be:
“Better than you.”
Marriage alone did not make every wife permanently superior.
17. THE WIVES OF NUH AND LUT WERE NOT SAVED BY THEIR PROPHET HUSBANDS
Allah says:
“Allah presents an example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were married to two righteous servants from among Our servants, but they betrayed them. Their husbands could not benefit them against Allah in any way, and it was said: Enter the Fire with those who enter.”
Qur’an 66:10
They were wives of Prophets.
Their husbands were righteous Messengers.
But marriage to a Prophet did not save them from Hell.
18. A SUNNI TAFSIR SAYS THIS WAS A WARNING TO THE PROPHET’S WIVES
Al-Sa‘di explains Qur’an 66:10:
“In this is an indication and warning to the Prophet’s wives against disobedience, and that their relationship with him will not benefit them at all if accompanied by wrongdoing.”
Reference: Al-Sa‘di, Taysir al-Karim al-Rahman, commentary on Qur’an 66:10.
This Sunni tafsir statement destroys the entire argument that being a Prophet’s wife guarantees salvation:
“Their relationship with him will not benefit them at all if accompanied by wrongdoing.”
19. THE WIFE OF PHARAOH PROVES THAT EVERY PERSON IS JUDGED BY THEIR OWN DEEDS
Allah says:
“Allah presents an example for those who believe: the wife of Pharaoh.”
Qur’an 66:11
The wife of Pharaoh was righteous despite being married to one of history’s greatest disbelievers.
The wives of Nuh and Lut were condemned despite being married to Prophets.
The lesson is clear:
A woman is not saved or condemned merely because of her husband.
Each person is judged through faith and deeds.
FINAL CONCLUSION
According to explicit Sunni authorities, the Prophet’s wives were mothers:
“In one meaning, not in every meaning.”
Imam al-Shafi‘i identifies that meaning as the permanent prohibition of marrying them.
Al-Baghawi states:
“It is the prohibition of marrying them.”
Al-Tabari gives the same legal explanation.
Aisha herself said:
“I am the mother of your men; I am not your mother.”
The title did not create biological motherhood.
It did not create inheritance.
It did not make their children the siblings of all believers.
It did not permit seclusion.
It did not create infallibility.
And it did not guarantee Paradise.
The Qur’an says:
Wrongdoing could bring them double punishment.
Obedience and righteous deeds could bring double reward.
Their distinction was conditional upon taqwa.
Aisha and Hafsa were ordered to repent.
They were threatened with replacement by wives better than them.
The wives of Nuh and Lut entered the Fire despite being married to Prophets.
Al-Sa‘di explicitly says this was a warning to Muhammad’s wives that their relationship with the Prophet would not benefit them if they committed wrongdoing.
Therefore, “Mother of the Believers” means a restricted legal motherhood whose central effect was that no believer could marry the Prophet’s wives after him.
It does not mean guaranteed Paradise.
It does not mean permanent righteousness.
It does not mean freedom from accountability.
And it does not mean that every later action of Aisha must automatically be declared correct.
