From the Terror of Judgment to the Day That Will Never End
There will come a moment when the believer’s final fear ends.
The life in which every happiness could be taken away will be over. Death will already have been tasted. The grave will be behind him. Resurrection will have taken place. Judgment will have come. The frightening uncertainty of the Hereafter will have reached its end.
Then, instead of punishment, angels will come toward him.
Instead of hearing that he has lost everything, he will hear:
هَٰذَا يَوْمُكُمُ الَّذِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ
“This is your Day which you were promised.”
Paradise will be brought near. Its gates will open. Its keepers will greet the believers with peace. They will be told that they have become pure and that they may now enter forever. Once inside, they will praise Allah for removing every sorrow. Then, after the inhabitants of Paradise have settled within it, another announcement will be made—an announcement unlike anything they have ever heard:
خُلُودٌ فَلَا مَوْتَ أَبَدًا
“Eternity—there will never again be death.”
The Qur’an and the narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt describe these moments with remarkable detail.
Part One: Before the Gates of Paradise
Category One: The Last Fear Comes to an End
1. The Greatest Terror Will Not Grieve Them
Qur’an — Surah al-Anbiyā’ 21:101–103

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ سَبَقَتْ لَهُمْ مِنَّا الْحُسْنَىٰ أُولَٰئِكَ عَنْهَا مُبْعَدُونَ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ حَسِيسَهَا وَهُمْ فِي مَا اشْتَهَتْ أَنْفُسُهُمْ خَالِدُونَ لَا يَحْزُنُهُمُ الْفَزَعُ الْأَكْبَرُ وَتَتَلَقَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ هَٰذَا يَوْمُكُمُ الَّذِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ.
English Translation
“Those for whom the best reward has already been decreed by Us will be kept far from the Fire. They will not hear even its slightest sound, and they will remain forever in whatever their souls desire. The Greatest Terror will not grieve them, and the angels will receive them, saying: ‘This is your Day which you were promised.’”

2. The Angels Will Say: “Do Not Fear and Do Not Grieve”

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقَامُوا تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَلَّا تَخَافُوا وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا بِالْجَنَّةِ الَّتِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ نَحْنُ أَوْلِيَاؤُكُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ وَلَكُمْ فِيهَا مَا تَشْتَهِي أَنْفُسُكُمْ وَلَكُمْ فِيهَا مَا تَدَّعُونَ نُزُلًا مِنْ غَفُورٍ رَحِيمٍ.
English Translation
“Those who say, ‘Our Lord is Allah,’ and then remain steadfast—the angels descend upon them, saying: ‘Do not fear and do not grieve, but receive the glad tidings of the Paradise you were promised. We are your friends in worldly life and in the Hereafter. You will have therein whatever your souls desire and whatever you request, as hospitality from the All-Forgiving, the Merciful.’”

Category Two: Paradise Comes Into View
3. Paradise Will Be Brought Near
Qur’an — Surah Qāf 50:31–33

وَأُزْلِفَتِ الْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ هَٰذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِكُلِّ أَوَّابٍ حَفِيظٍ مَنْ خَشِيَ الرَّحْمَٰنَ بِالْغَيْبِ وَجَاءَ بِقَلْبٍ مُنِيبٍ.
English Translation
“Paradise will be brought near to the God-conscious, no longer distant. ‘This is what you were promised—for every one who constantly returned to Allah and guarded himself, who feared the Most Merciful in the unseen and came with a heart that turned to Him.’”

4. “Peace Be Upon You—Enter Paradise”
Qur’an — Surah al-Naḥl 16:31–32

جَنَّاتُ عَدْنٍ يَدْخُلُونَهَا تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ لَهُمْ فِيهَا مَا يَشَاءُونَ كَذَٰلِكَ يَجْزِي اللَّهُ الْمُتَّقِينَ الَّذِينَ تَتَوَفَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ طَيِّبِينَ يَقُولُونَ سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمُ ادْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ.
English Translation
“Gardens of Eden which they will enter, with rivers flowing beneath them. There they will have whatever they wish. Thus does Allah reward the God-conscious—those whom the angels take while they are pure, saying: ‘Peace be upon you. Enter Paradise because of what you used to do.’”

5. “Enter in Peace and Complete Security”
Qur’an — Surah al-Ḥijr 15:45–48

إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ ادْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَامٍ آمِنِينَ وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِمْ مِنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَانًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُتَقَابِلِينَ لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَمَا هُمْ مِنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ.
English Translation
“The God-conscious will be within Gardens and springs. ‘Enter them in peace and complete security.’ We will remove whatever rancour remains within their hearts; they will be brothers upon couches facing one another. No fatigue will touch them therein, nor will they ever be removed from it.”

6. They Will Be Received With Greeting and Peace
Qur’an — Surah al-Furqān 25:75–76

أُولَٰئِكَ يُجْزَوْنَ الْغُرْفَةَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا وَيُلَقَّوْنَ فِيهَا تَحِيَّةً وَسَلَامًا خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا حَسُنَتْ مُسْتَقَرًّا وَمُقَامًا.
English Translation
“They will be rewarded with the elevated chamber because of their patience, and they will be received therein with greetings and peace. They will remain there forever—excellent as a settlement and residence.”

The entrance is not cold or silent; it is a reception of honour.
Category Four: The Gates Finally Open
7. The Righteous Will Arrive in Groups
Qur’an — Surah al-Zumar 39:73–74

وَسِيقَ الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا رَبَّهُمْ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ زُمَرًا حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَاءُوهَا وَفُتِحَتْ أَبْوَابُهَا وَقَالَ لَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَا سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ طِبْتُمْ فَادْخُلُوهَا خَالِدِينَ وَقَالُوا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي صَدَقَنَا وَعْدَهُ وَأَوْرَثَنَا الْأَرْضَ نَتَبَوَّأُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ حَيْثُ نَشَاءُ فَنِعْمَ أَجْرُ الْعَامِلِينَ.
English Translation
“Those who remained conscious of their Lord will be led toward Paradise in groups. When they reach it and its gates are opened, its keepers will say to them: ‘Peace be upon you. You have become pure, so enter it to remain forever.’ They will say: ‘All praise belongs to Allah, who fulfilled His promise to us and made us inherit the land, so that we may settle wherever we wish within Paradise. Excellent is the reward of those who act.’”

After a lifetime of believing in Allah’s promise, the believer will finally say: “He fulfilled His promise to us.”

Category Five: “Enter Paradise”
8. “No Fear Today—Enter Rejoicing”
Qur’an — Surah al-Zukhruf 43:68–73

يَا عِبَادِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْكُمُ الْيَوْمَ وَلَا أَنْتُمْ تَحْزَنُونَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِآيَاتِنَا وَكَانُوا مُسْلِمِينَ ادْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ أَنْتُمْ وَأَزْوَاجُكُمْ تُحْبَرُونَ يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِمْ بِصِحَافٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَأَكْوَابٍ وَفِيهَا مَا تَشْتَهِيهِ الْأَنْفُسُ وَتَلَذُّ الْأَعْيُنُ وَأَنْتُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ وَتِلْكَ الْجَنَّةُ الَّتِي أُورِثْتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ لَكُمْ فِيهَا فَاكِهَةٌ كَثِيرَةٌ مِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ.
English Translation
“‘My servants, no fear will be upon you today, nor will you grieve—you who believed in Our signs and submitted. Enter Paradise, you and your spouses, rejoicing.’ Golden dishes and cups will be passed around them. Therein will be whatever souls desire and eyes delight in, and you will remain therein forever. This is the Paradise you have inherited because of what you used to do. You will have abundant fruit therein from which you will eat.”

9. “This Is the Day of Eternity”
Qur’an — Surah Qāf 50:34–35

ادْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَامٍ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ الْخُلُودِ لَهُمْ مَا يَشَاءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيْنَا مَزِيدٌ.
English Translation
“‘Enter it in peace. This is the Day of Eternity.’ They will have whatever they desire therein, and with Us is even more.”

10. “Enter Among My Servants and Enter My Paradise”
Qur’an — Surah al-Fajr 89:27–30

يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ ارْجِعِي إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَرْضِيَّةً فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي.
English Translation
“O tranquil soul! Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing. Enter among My servants, and enter My Paradise.”

Category Six: The Believers Are Carried Toward Paradise
11. Angels Will Receive the Believers as They Travel Toward Paradise
A narration transmitted through Imam Ali, peace be upon him, from the Messenger of Allah states:

وَمَنْ خَرَجَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ، ثُمَّ تَلَا هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ﴾ مِنْ شِيعَتِكَ وَمُحِبِّيكَ يَا عَلِيُّ.
قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عليه السلام: فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، هَذَا لِشِيعَتِي؟
قَالَ: إِي وَرَبِّي، إِنَّهُ لِشِيعَتِكَ، وَإِنَّهُمْ لَيَخْرُجُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنْ قُبُورِهِمْ وَهُمْ يَقُولُونَ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ حُجَّةُ اللَّهِ.
فَيُؤْتَوْنَ بِحُلَلٍ خُضْرٍ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَأَكَالِيلَ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَتِيجَانٍ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَنَجَائِبَ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ، فَيَلْبَسُ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمْ حُلَّةً خَضْرَاءَ، وَيُوضَعُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ تَاجُ الْمُلْكِ وَإِكْلِيلُ الْكَرَامَةِ، ثُمَّ يَرْكَبُونَ النَّجَائِبَ فَتَطِيرُ بِهِمْ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ: ﴿لَا يَحْزُنُهُمُ الْفَزَعُ الْأَكْبَرُ وَتَتَلَقَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ هَٰذَا يَوْمُكُمُ الَّذِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ﴾.
English Translation
“Whoever leaves this world without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise.” He then recited: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but forgives what is less than that for whomever He wills,” concerning your followers and those who love you, O Ali.
Imam Ali asked: “O Messenger of Allah, is this for my followers?”
He replied: “Yes, by my Lord, it is for your followers. They will rise from their graves on the Day of Resurrection saying: ‘There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; Ali ibn Abi Talib is the proof of Allah.’
Green garments from Paradise, wreaths from Paradise, crowns from Paradise and noble mounts from Paradise will be brought to them. Each will wear a green garment, and upon his head will be placed the crown of sovereignty and the wreath of honour. They will then mount the noble mounts, which will carry them flying toward Paradise:
‘The Greatest Terror will not grieve them, and the angels will receive them, saying: This is your Day which you were promised.’”

Part Five: Those Who Reach Paradise Before Ordinary Reckoning
Category Seven: The People of Patience
12. They Will Knock at the Gate
Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said:

إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ يَقُومُ عُنُقٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ فَيَأْتُونَ بَابَ الْجَنَّةِ فَيَضْرِبُونَهُ فَيُقَالُ لَهُمْ مَنْ أَنْتُمْ فَيَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ أَهْلُ الصَّبْرِ فَيُقَالُ لَهُمْ عَلَى مَا صَبَرْتُمْ فَيَقُولُونَ كُنَّا نَصْبِرُ عَلَى طَاعَةِ اللَّهِ وَنَصْبِرُ عَنْ مَعَاصِي اللَّهِ فَيَقُولُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ صَدَقُوا أَدْخِلُوهُمُ الْجَنَّةَ وَهُوَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: ﴿إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى الصَّابِرُونَ أَجْرَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ﴾.
English Translation
“On the Day of Resurrection a group of people will approach the gate of Paradise and knock upon it. They will be asked: ‘Who are you?’ They will say: ‘We are the people of patience.’ They will be asked: ‘In what did you exercise patience?’ They will reply: ‘We remained patient in obeying Allah and remained patient in restraining ourselves from disobeying Allah.’ Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will say: ‘They have spoken the truth. Admit them into Paradise.’ This is the meaning of Allah’s words: ‘Indeed, the patient will receive their reward without reckoning.’”

Category Eight: The Poor Believers
13. The Poor Will Reach the Gate Before the Reckoning
Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said:

إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ قَامَ عُنُقٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ حَتَّى يَأْتُوا بَابَ الْجَنَّةِ فَيَضْرِبُوا بَابَ الْجَنَّةِ، فَيُقَالُ لَهُمْ: مَنْ أَنْتُمْ؟ فَيَقُولُونَ: نَحْنُ الْفُقَرَاءُ. فَيُقَالُ لَهُمْ: أَقَبْلَ الْحِسَابِ؟ فَيَقُولُونَ: مَا أَعْطَيْتُمُونَا شَيْئًا تُحَاسِبُونَا عَلَيْهِ. فَيَقُولُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: صَدَقُوا، ادْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ.
English Translation
“On the Day of Resurrection a group of people will rise and proceed until they reach the gate of Paradise and knock upon it. They will be asked: ‘Who are you?’ They will reply: ‘We are the poor.’ They will be asked: ‘Before the reckoning?’ They will say: ‘You did not give us anything for which You would now hold us to account.’ Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will say: ‘They have spoken the truth. Enter Paradise.’”

Category Nine: The Forgiving, the Patient and the Friends of Allah
14. Three Groups Will Be Told to Proceed to Paradise
Imam Zayn al-‘Abidin, peace be upon him, said:

إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ نَادَى مُنَادٍ: لِيَقُمْ أَهْلُ الْفَضْلِ. فَيَقُومُ نَاسٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ، فَيُقَالُ: انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ. فَتَلَقَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ فَيَقُولُونَ: إِلَى أَيْنَ؟ فَيَقُولُونَ: إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ. قَالُوا: قَبْلَ الْحِسَابِ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ. قَالُوا: مَنْ أَنْتُمْ؟ قَالُوا: أَهْلُ الْفَضْلِ. قَالُوا: وَمَا كَانَ فَضْلُكُمْ؟ قَالُوا: كُنَّا إِذَا جُهِلَ عَلَيْنَا حَلُمْنَا، وَإِذَا ظُلِمْنَا صَبَرْنَا، وَإِذَا أُسِيءَ إِلَيْنَا غَفَرْنَا. قَالُوا: ادْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ فَنِعْمَ أَجْرُ الْعَامِلِينَ.
ثُمَّ يَقُولُ مُنَادٍ: لِيَقُمْ أَهْلُ الصَّبْرِ. فَيَقُومُ نَاسٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ، فَيُقَالُ لَهُمْ: ادْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ. فَتَلَقَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ فَيُقَالُ لَهُمْ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ، فَيَقُولُونَ: نَحْنُ أَهْلُ الصَّبْرِ. قَالُوا: وَمَا كَانَ صَبْرُكُمْ؟ قَالُوا: صَبَرْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا عَلَى طَاعَةِ اللَّهِ وَصَبَرْنَاهَا عَنْ مَعْصِيَةِ اللَّهِ. قَالُوا: ادْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ فَنِعْمَ أَجْرُ الْعَامِلِينَ.
ثُمَّ يُنَادِي مُنَادٍ: لِيَقُمْ جِيرَانُ اللَّهِ فِي دَارِهِ. فَيَقُومُ نَاسٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ وَهُمْ قَلِيلٌ، فَيُقَالُ لَهُمْ: انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ. فَتَلَقَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ فَيُقَالُ لَهُمْ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ، قَالُوا: وَبِمَ جَاوَرْتُمُ اللَّهَ فِي دَارِهِ؟ قَالُوا: كُنَّا نَتَزَاوَرُ فِي اللَّهِ، وَنَتَجَالَسُ فِي اللَّهِ، وَنَتَبَاذَلُ فِي اللَّهِ. قَالُوا: ادْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ فَنِعْمَ أَجْرُ الْعَامِلِينَ.
English Translation
“On the Day of Resurrection a caller will announce: ‘Let the people of virtue arise.’ A group will arise and be told: ‘Proceed toward Paradise.’ The angels will meet them and ask: ‘Where are you going?’ They will say: ‘To Paradise.’ The angels will ask: ‘Before the reckoning?’ They will reply: ‘Yes.’ They will ask: ‘Who are you?’ They will say: ‘We are the people of virtue.’ They will ask: ‘What was your virtue?’ They will reply: ‘When people acted ignorantly toward us, we showed forbearance; when we were wronged, we remained patient; and when we were treated badly, we forgave.’ They will be told: ‘Enter Paradise. Excellent is the reward of those who act.’
Then a caller will announce: ‘Let the people of patience arise.’ They will be told to enter Paradise. The angels will meet them and question them similarly. They will say: ‘We restrained ourselves upon obedience to Allah and restrained ourselves from disobeying Allah.’ They will be told: ‘Enter Paradise. Excellent is the reward of those who act.’
Then a caller will announce: ‘Let the neighbours of Allah in His abode arise.’ A small group will arise and be told: ‘Proceed toward Paradise.’ The angels will meet them and ask them similarly: ‘Through what did you become neighbours of Allah in His abode?’ They will reply: ‘We visited one another for Allah, sat with one another for Allah and generously shared with one another for Allah.’ They will be told: ‘Enter Paradise. Excellent is the reward of those who act.’”

Forgiving someone, controlling anger and loving another believer for Allah may one day become the reason an angel says: “Enter Paradise.”

Category Ten: Eight Gates
15. Paradise Has Eight Gates
Imam Ali, peace be upon him, said:

إِنَّ لِلْجَنَّةِ ثَمَانِيَةَ أَبْوَابٍ: بَابٌ يَدْخُلُ مِنْهُ النَّبِيُّونَ وَالصِّدِّيقُونَ، وَبَابٌ يَدْخُلُ مِنْهُ الشُّهَدَاءُ وَالصَّالِحُونَ، وَخَمْسَةُ أَبْوَابٍ يَدْخُلُ مِنْهَا شِيعَتُنَا وَمُحِبُّونَا.
فَلَا أَزَالُ وَاقِفًا عَلَى الصِّرَاطِ أَدْعُو وَأَقُولُ: رَبِّ سَلِّمْ شِيعَتِي وَمُحِبِّي وَأَنْصَارِي وَمَنْ تَوَلَّانِي فِي دَارِ الدُّنْيَا.
فَإِذَا النِّدَاءُ مِنْ بُطْنَانِ الْعَرْشِ: قَدْ أُجِيبَتْ دَعْوَتُكَ وَشُفِّعْتَ فِي شِيعَتِكَ.
وَيَشْفَعُ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنْ شِيعَتِي وَمَنْ تَوَلَّانِي وَنَصَرَنِي وَحَارَبَ مَنْ حَارَبَنِي بِفِعْلٍ أَوْ قَوْلٍ فِي سَبْعِينَ أَلْفًا مِنْ جِيرَانِهِ وَأَقْرِبَائِهِ.
وَبَابٌ يَدْخُلُ مِنْهُ سَائِرُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ مِمَّنْ شَهِدَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِقْدَارُ ذَرَّةٍ مِنْ بُغْضِنَا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ.
English Translation
“Paradise has eight gates. One gate is entered by the prophets and the truthful. One gate is entered by the martyrs and the righteous. Five gates are entered by our Shi‘ah and those who love us.
I will remain standing upon the Bridge, praying: ‘My Lord, grant safety to my Shi‘ah, those who love me, my supporters and those who accepted my guardianship in worldly life.’
A call will come from within the Throne: ‘Your prayer has been answered and your intercession concerning your Shi‘ah has been accepted.’
Every man among my Shi‘ah, those who accepted my authority, supported me and opposed those who fought me through action or speech, will intercede for seventy thousand of his neighbours and relatives.
The remaining gate is for the other Muslims who testify that there is no god but Allah and whose hearts contain not even the weight of a particle of hatred toward us, the Ahl al-Bayt.”

16. Some Believers May Choose Any Gate
Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said:

مَنْ أَقَامَ فَرَائِضَ اللَّهِ، وَاجْتَنَبَ مَحَارِمَ اللَّهِ، وَأَحْسَنَ الْوَلَايَةَ لِأَهْلِ بَيْتِ نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ، وَتَبَرَّأَ مِنْ أَعْدَاءِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، فَلْيَدْخُلْ مِنْ أَيِّ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ الثَّمَانِيَةِ شَاءَ.
English Translation
“Whoever establishes the obligations of Allah, avoids what Allah has prohibited, perfects his loyalty to the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet of Allah and dissociates himself from the enemies of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, may enter through whichever of the eight gates of Paradise he wishes.”

17. Riḍwān Will Call the Fasting Believers Through al-Rayyān
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his family, said:

وَلِلْجَنَّةِ بَابٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ الرَّيَّانُ، لَا يُفْتَحُ ذَلِكَ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ، ثُمَّ يُفْتَحُ لِلصَّائِمِينَ وَالصَّائِمَاتِ مِنْ أُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ صلى الله عليه وآله، ثُمَّ يُنَادِي رِضْوَانُ خَازِنُ الْجَنَّةِ: يَا أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ، هَلُمُّوا إِلَى الرَّيَّانِ، فَتَدْخُلُ أُمَّتِي فِي ذَلِكَ الْبَابِ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ.
English Translation
“Paradise has a gate called al-Rayyān. It will not be opened until the Day of Resurrection. Then it will be opened for the fasting men and women from the nation of Muhammad. Riḍwān, the keeper of Paradise, will call: ‘O nation of Muhammad, come toward al-Rayyān!’ My nation will then enter Paradise through that gate.”

18. The Gate of Benevolent Goodness
Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said:

إِنَّ لِلْجَنَّةِ بَابًا يُقَالُ لَهُ الْمَعْرُوفُ لَا يَدْخُلُهُ إِلَّا أَهْلُ الْمَعْرُوفِ، وَأَهْلُ الْمَعْرُوفِ فِي الدُّنْيَا هُمْ أَهْلُ الْمَعْرُوفِ فِي الْآخِرَةِ.
English Translation
“Paradise has a gate called al-Ma‘rūf. None will enter it except the people of benevolent goodness, and the people of benevolent goodness in this world will be the people of benevolent goodness in the Hereafter.”

19. The People of Benevolent Goodness Will Be Among the First to Enter
Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, peace be upon him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:

أَوَّلُ مَنْ يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ الْمَعْرُوفُ وَأَهْلُهُ، وَأَوَّلُ مَنْ يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ.
English Translation
“The first to enter Paradise will be benevolent goodness and its people, and they will be the first to come to me at the Pool.”

Part Seven: The Prophet and the Ahl al-Bayt at the Entrance
The Shia narrations describe several distinct forms of precedence: one narration concerns the opening of the gate for the Prophet, another describes Imam Ali advancing as the bearer of the Banner of Praise, while others speak of particular righteous groups being first within their own categories. These reports are preserved here according to their own wording rather than being forced into a single simplified sequence.
Category Twelve: The Prophet and the Opening of Paradise
20. The Gate Will Not Be Opened for Anyone Before the Prophet
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his family, said:

آتِي بَابَ الْجَنَّةِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَأَسْتَفْتِحُ، فَيَقُولُ الْخَازِنُ: مَنْ أَنْتَ؟ فَأَقُولُ: مُحَمَّدٌ. فَيَقُولُ: بِكَ أُمِرْتُ، لَا أَفْتَحُ لِأَحَدٍ قَبْلَكَ.
English Translation
“I will come to the gate of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection and request that it be opened. The keeper will ask: ‘Who are you?’ I will say: ‘Muhammad.’ He will reply: ‘I was commanded concerning you. I will not open it for anyone before you.’”

21. Riḍwān Will Bring the Keys of Paradise
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his family, said:

فَبَيْنَا أَنَا كَذَلِكَ إِذَا مَلَكَانِ قَدْ أَقْبَلَا إِلَيَّ، أَمَّا أَحَدُهُمَا فَرِضْوَانُ خَازِنُ الْجَنَّةِ، وَأَمَّا الْآخَرُ فَمَالِكٌ خَازِنُ النَّارِ.
فَيَدْنُو رِضْوَانُ فَيَقُولُ: السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَحْمَدُ.
فَأَقُولُ: السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا الْمَلَكُ، مَنْ أَنْتَ؟ فَمَا أَحْسَنَ وَجْهَكَ وَأَطْيَبَ رِيحَكَ!
فَيَقُولُ: أَنَا رِضْوَانُ خَازِنُ الْجَنَّةِ، وَهَذِهِ مَفَاتِيحُ الْجَنَّةِ، بَعَثَ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ رَبُّ الْعِزَّةِ، فَخُذْهَا يَا أَحْمَدُ.
فَأَقُولُ: قَدْ قَبِلْتُ ذَلِكَ مِنْ رَبِّي، فَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى مَا فَضَّلَنِي بِهِ، ادْفَعْهَا إِلَى أَخِي عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ.
ثُمَّ يَرْجِعُ رِضْوَانُ.
English Translation
“While I am in that state, two angels will approach me. One of them will be Riḍwān, the keeper of Paradise, and the other Mālik, the keeper of the Fire. Riḍwān will approach and say: ‘Peace be upon you, O Ahmad.’
I will reply: ‘Peace be upon you, O angel. Who are you? How beautiful is your face and how pleasant is your fragrance!’
He will say: ‘I am Riḍwān, the keeper of Paradise. These are the keys of Paradise which the Lord of Might has sent to you. Take them, O Ahmad.’
I will say: ‘I accept this from my Lord. All praise belongs to Him for the favour by which He has honoured me. Give them to my brother Ali ibn Abi Talib.’
Riḍwān will then withdraw.”

22. Imam Ali Advances as the Banner-Bearer
Imam Ali, peace be upon him, said:

قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وآله: أَنْتَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ.
فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَدْخُلُهَا قَبْلَكَ؟
قَالَ: نَعَمْ، إِنَّكَ صَاحِبُ لِوَائِي فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَمَا أَنَّكَ صَاحِبُ لِوَائِي فِي الدُّنْيَا، وَحَامِلُ اللِّوَاءِ هُوَ الْمُتَقَدِّمُ.
ثُمَّ قَالَ صلى الله عليه وآله: يَا عَلِيُّ، كَأَنِّي بِكَ وَقَدْ دَخَلْتَ الْجَنَّةَ وَبِيَدِكَ لِوَائِي، وَهُوَ لِوَاءُ الْحَمْدِ، تَحْتَهُ آدَمُ فَمَنْ دُونَهُ.
English Translation
“The Messenger of Allah said to me: ‘You will be the first to enter Paradise.’
I asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah, will I enter it before you?’
He replied: ‘Yes. You are the bearer of my banner in the Hereafter just as you were the bearer of my banner in worldly life, and the bearer of the banner advances ahead.’
He then said: ‘O Ali, it is as though I see you having entered Paradise with my banner in your hand—the Banner of Praise—beneath which are Adam and all those after him.’”

يَا عَلِيُّ، أَنْتَ إِمَامُ أُمَّتِي وَخَلِيفَتِي عَلَيْهَا بَعْدِي، وَأَنْتَ قَائِدُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ، وَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى ابْنَتِي فَاطِمَةَ قَدْ أَقْبَلَتْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَلَى نَجِيبٍ مِنْ نُورٍ، عَنْ يَمِينِهَا سَبْعُونَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ، وَعَنْ يَسَارِهَا سَبْعُونَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ، وَبَيْنَ يَدَيْهَا سَبْعُونَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ، وَخَلْفَهَا سَبْعُونَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ، تَقُودُ مُؤْمِنَاتِ أُمَّتِي إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ.
English Translation
“O Ali, you are the Imam of my nation and my successor over it after me, and you are the leader of the believers toward Paradise. It is as though I see my daughter Fatimah approaching on the Day of Resurrection upon a noble mount of light. To her right will be seventy thousand angels, to her left seventy thousand angels, before her seventy thousand angels and behind her seventy thousand angels. She will lead the believing women of my nation toward Paradise.”

24. The Inhabitants Will Praise Allah After Entering

جَنَّاتُ عَدْنٍ يَدْخُلُونَهَا يُحَلَّوْنَ فِيهَا مِنْ أَسَاوِرَ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَلُؤْلُؤًا وَلِبَاسُهُمْ فِيهَا حَرِيرٌ وَقَالُوا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَذْهَبَ عَنَّا الْحَزَنَ إِنَّ رَبَّنَا لَغَفُورٌ شَكُورٌ الَّذِي أَحَلَّنَا دَارَ الْمُقَامَةِ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ لَا يَمَسُّنَا فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَلَا يَمَسُّنَا فِيهَا لُغُوبٌ.
English Translation
“They will enter the Gardens of Eden… and they will say: ‘All praise belongs to Allah, who has removed all sorrow from us. Our Lord is truly All-Forgiving, Most Appreciative—the One who, through His grace, has settled us in the Home of Permanent Residence. No fatigue will touch us here, nor will any weariness touch us.’”

Category Sixteen: They Receive Their Eternal Residences
25. The People of Paradise Will Be Settled Without Prolonged Delay
A report concerning Qur’an 25:24 states that the people of Paradise will reach their residences by the middle of that Day:

وَأَقْبَلَ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ فِيمَا اشْتَهَوْا مِنَ التُّحَفِ، حَتَّى يُعْطَوْا مَنَازِلَهُمْ فِي الْجَنَّةِ نِصْفَ النَّهَارِ، فَذَلِكَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: ﴿أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَيْرٌ مُسْتَقَرًّا وَأَحْسَنُ مَقِيلًا﴾.
English Translation
“The people of Paradise will proceed among whatever gifts they desire until they are given their residences within Paradise by midday. This is the meaning of Allah’s words: ‘The inhabitants of Paradise on that Day will have the best residence and the finest resting place.’”

26. Imam Ali Will Settle the Inhabitants in Their Residences

فَإِذَا دَخَلَ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَهْلُ النَّارِ النَّارَ، بَعَثَ رَبُّ الْعِزَّةِ عَلِيًّا عليه السلام، فَأَنْزَلَهُمْ مَنَازِلَهُمْ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَزَوَّجَهُمْ، فَعَلِيٌّ وَاللَّهِ الَّذِي يُزَوِّجُ أَهْلَ الْجَنَّةِ فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَمَا ذَاكَ لِأَحَدٍ غَيْرِهِ، كَرَامَةً مِنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ ذِكْرُهُ وَفَضْلًا فَضَّلَهُ اللَّهُ بِهِ وَمَنَّ بِهِ عَلَيْهِ، وَهُوَ وَاللَّهِ الَّذِي يُغْلِقُ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ إِذَا دَخَلُوا فِيهَا أَبْوَابَهَا، لِأَنَّ أَبْوَابَ الْجَنَّةِ إِلَيْهِ وَأَبْوَابَ النَّارِ إِلَيْهِ.
English Translation
“When the people of Paradise have entered Paradise and the people of the Fire have entered the Fire, the Lord of Might will send Ali, peace be upon him, and he will settle them within their residences in Paradise and arrange their marriages. By Allah, Ali is the one who will arrange the marriages of the people of Paradise within Paradise. This belongs to no one else, as an honour from Allah, Mighty is His remembrance, and a distinction Allah has granted him. By Allah, he is also the one who will close the gates upon the people of Paradise after they have entered, for the gates of Paradise are entrusted to him and the gates of the Fire are entrusted to him.”

Part Nine: The Greatest Announcement After Entry
Category Seventeen: Death Itself Will End
Paradise would not be complete if its inhabitants still feared that one day they might lose it.
A person in this world can possess health and then become ill. He can possess youth and become old. He can love someone and lose them. He can own a home and leave it. Every worldly happiness exists beneath the shadow of death.
That shadow will not exist in Paradise.
27. Death Will Be Brought and Slaughtered
Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, explained:

يُنَادِي مُنَادٍ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ، وَذَلِكَ بَعْدَ مَا صَارَ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَأَهْلُ النَّارِ فِي النَّارِ: يَا أَهْلَ الْجَنَّةِ وَيَا أَهْلَ النَّارِ، هَلْ تَعْرِفُونَ الْمَوْتَ فِي صُورَةٍ مِنَ الصُّوَرِ؟
فَيَقُولُونَ: لَا.
فَيُؤْتَى بِالْمَوْتِ فِي صُورَةِ كَبْشٍ أَمْلَحَ فَيُوقَفُ بَيْنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَالنَّارِ، ثُمَّ يُنَادَوْنَ جَمِيعًا: أَشْرِفُوا وَانْظُرُوا إِلَى الْمَوْتِ.
فَيُشْرِفُونَ، ثُمَّ يَأْمُرُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِهِ فَيُذْبَحُ، ثُمَّ يُقَالُ: يَا أَهْلَ الْجَنَّةِ، خُلُودٌ فَلَا مَوْتَ أَبَدًا، وَيَا أَهْلَ النَّارِ، خُلُودٌ فَلَا مَوْتَ أَبَدًا.
English Translation
“A caller from Allah will announce after the people of Paradise have entered Paradise and the people of the Fire have entered the Fire:
‘O people of Paradise and O people of the Fire, do you recognise death in any form?’
They will say: ‘No.’
Death will be brought in the form of a black-and-white ram and placed between Paradise and the Fire. They will all be called: ‘Look out and behold death.’
They will look. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will then command that it be slaughtered.
It will then be proclaimed:
‘O people of Paradise: eternity—there will never again be death!
O people of the Fire: eternity—there will never again be death!’”

28. Their Response: “This Is the Supreme Triumph”
A related narration from Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, peace be upon him, states:

إِذَا دَخَلَ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَهْلُ النَّارِ النَّارَ، جِيءَ بِالْمَوْتِ فَيُذْبَحُ كَالْكَبْشِ بَيْنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَالنَّارِ، ثُمَّ يُقَالُ لَهُمْ: خُلُودٌ فَلَا مَوْتَ أَبَدًا.
فَيَقُولُ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ:
﴿أَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ إِلَّا مَوْتَتَنَا الْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ إِنَّ هَذَا لَهُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ لِمِثْلِ هَذَا فَلْيَعْمَلِ الْعَامِلُونَ﴾.
English Translation
“When the people of Paradise have entered Paradise and the people of the Fire have entered the Fire, death will be brought and slaughtered like a ram between Paradise and the Fire. It will then be said to them:
‘Eternity—there will never again be death.’
The people of Paradise will say:
‘Are we then never to die again except our first death, and are we never to be punished? This indeed is the supreme triumph! For something like this let those who work strive.’”

29. They Will Desire No Substitute for Paradise
Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, explained the words:
خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا لَا يَبْغُونَ عَنْهَا حِوَلًا
by saying:

خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا: لَا يَخْرُجُونَ مِنْهَا، وَلَا يَبْغُونَ عَنْهَا حِوَلًا: لَا يُرِيدُونَ بِهَا بَدَلًا.
English Translation
“‘Remaining therein forever’ means that they will never leave it; and ‘they will not desire any change from it’ means that they will desire no substitute for it.”

No inhabitant will ever think that another existence could be better.
Conclusion: The Moment Every Sacrifice Becomes Worth It
The believer who enters Paradise will have crossed every stage that once frightened him.
Death will be behind him. The grave will be behind him. Resurrection will be behind him. The terrifying uncertainty of the Judgment will be behind him. Hell will have been kept away from him.
Then the angels will meet him:
هَٰذَا يَوْمُكُمُ الَّذِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ
“This is your Day which you were promised.”
Paradise will be brought near.
The gates will open.
The keepers will say:
سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ طِبْتُمْ فَادْخُلُوهَا خَالِدِينَ
“Peace be upon you. You have become pure, so enter it forever.”
Allah will declare:
ادْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَامٍ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ الْخُلُودِ
“Enter it in peace. This is the Day of Eternity.”
The inhabitants will look at what Allah has given them and say:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي صَدَقَنَا وَعْدَهُ
“All praise belongs to Allah, who fulfilled His promise to us.”
Then they will realise that something else has disappeared:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَذْهَبَ عَنَّا الْحَزَنَ
“All praise belongs to Allah, who removed all sorrow from us.”
There will be no fear that this happiness is temporary. No fear that youth will end. No fear that health will collapse. No fear that loved ones will die. No fear that the home will be lost. No fear that another trial is waiting tomorrow.
Finally the announcement will come:
يَا أَهْلَ الْجَنَّةِ، خُلُودٌ فَلَا مَوْتَ أَبَدًا
“O people of Paradise: eternity—there will never again be death.”
Imagine spending an entire worldly life knowing that every beautiful moment will eventually pass, and then hearing from Allah that this one never will.
The people of Paradise will say:
أَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ إِلَّا مَوْتَتَنَا الْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ إِنَّ هَذَا لَهُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ لِمِثْلِ هَذَا فَلْيَعْمَلِ الْعَامِلُونَ
“Are we then never to die again, except our first death, and are we never to be punished? This indeed is the supreme triumph. For something like this, let those who work strive.”
Qur’an 37:58–61.
This is why Paradise is worth patience.
It is worth controlling a desire for Allah.
It is worth forgiving when revenge feels easier.
It is worth remaining honest when dishonesty appears profitable.
It is worth worshipping when the body is tired.
It is worth fasting when one is thirsty.
It is worth doing good when nobody notices.
It is worth remaining loyal to Allah when the world offers something easier.
Because the believer is not striving for a pleasure that lasts an hour, a year or even a thousand years.
He is striving for the moment when the gates open and he hears:
ادْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَامٍ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ الْخُلُودِ
“Enter it in peace. This is the Day of Eternity.”
