Its Vastness, Light, Climate, Palaces, Gardens, Rivers, Fragrance and Heavenly Sounds
Introduction
Paradise is not described in the Qur’an as an empty spiritual state or merely an invisible feeling of happiness. It is presented as an immense, inhabited and living realm containing Gardens, rivers, springs, elevated chambers, beautiful residences, gates, palaces, courtyards, trees, fruits, permanent shade, furnishings, precious stones and radiant light.
The narrations of Prophet Muhammad, Lady Fatimah and the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them, expand this Qur’anic picture. They describe walls of ruby and light, buildings of gold and silver, chambers of pearl, elevated residences, rivers flowing beneath homes, silver-like marble ground, saffron-coloured soil, musk beneath the feet, pearl and ruby pebbles, fragrant winds, flowering clouds and trees producing sounds never previously heard by creation.
Paradise will therefore be experienced through every perfected sense:
- the eyes will see immense Gardens, radiant dwellings, rivers, jewel-like architecture and living vegetation;
- the nose will perceive musk, saffron, camphor, ambergris, basil, jasmine and the fragrance of Paradise itself;
- the body will experience permanent comfort, gentle shade, yielding ground and an environment containing neither oppressive heat nor painful cold;
- the ears will hear greetings of peace, praise of Allah, angelic congratulations, the sound of heavenly gates, the rustling of trees and an incomparable sound produced when Allah commands the wind to move a tree of Paradise.
This chapter uses only directly relevant Qur’anic passages and narrations attributed to Prophet Muhammad, Lady Fatimah and the Imams. When a narration forms part of a much longer report, the complete continuous passage relevant to the physical or sensory description has been reproduced.
Part One: The Qur’anic Landscape of Paradise
1. A Realm as Vast as the Heavens and the Earth
Qur’an — Surah Āl ‘Imrān 3:133
English Translation
“Hasten toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Paradise whose width is the heavens and the earth, prepared for the God-conscious.”
Qur’an — Surah al-Ḥadīd 57:21
English Translation
“Compete toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Paradise whose width is like the width of heaven and earth, prepared for those who believe in Allah and His messengers. That is Allah’s favour, which He grants to whomever He wills, and Allah possesses immense favour.”

“The bishop of Najran came and asked:
‘You recite in your Book that Allah possesses a Paradise whose width is like the width of heaven and earth. Where, then, will Hell be?’
Umar remained silent and lowered his head.
The Commander of the Faithful, who was present, told him to answer, but Umar asked Imam Ali to answer instead.
Imam Ali said:
‘O bishop of Najran, I shall answer you. When daytime arrives, where is the night? When night arrives, where is the day?’
The bishop replied:
‘I did not believe anyone would be able to answer this question.’”

English Translation
“The Gardens of Eden which the Most Merciful promised His servants in the unseen—His promise will certainly be fulfilled.
They will hear no meaningless speech therein, but only peace, and their provision will come to them morning and evening.
That is the Paradise We grant as an inheritance to those of Our servants who were God-conscious.”
The verse uses the familiar expressions morning and evening, but it does not itself explain whether these are produced by an earthly solar cycle, signs of ordered recurring provision or language expressing familiar intervals.

Likewise, no direct narration used here establishes that the inhabitants will experience total darkness.

The existence of ordered intervals is indicated, but the precise astronomical mechanism of heavenly time is not directly defined in the verified Ma‘ṣūm reports used here.

“Its mortar is musk and saffron.”
From the furnishings

42. The Heavenly Tree Producing an Incomparable Sound
Imam Ali al-Rida, peace be upon him, said:
Complete English Translation
“Whoever keeps his soul free from forbidden singing will find within Paradise a tree which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commands the winds to move.
He will hear from it a sound unlike anything he has ever heard.
Whoever did not keep himself free from it will not hear that sound.”
Reference
- Al-Kāfī, vol. 6, p. 434, hadith 19
The wording is also preserved in the Arabic al-Kāfī text.
Short Comment

43. The Rustling Trees and Neighing Horses
The narrations also describe the following natural sounds:
The trees
“The rustling and striking together of trees.”
The horses
“Their horses will neigh among the trees of those Gardens.”
The fruits
“O friend of Allah, eat me.”
The gates
“It will produce a resonant sound.”
Short Comment
Paradise will not be silent; every sound will be beautiful, meaningful, welcoming and free from disturbance.
44. What Is Not Directly Established About Heavenly Sound
The verified texts establish:
- greetings of peace;
- glorification and praise;
- angelic congratulations;
- the voices of responsive fruits;
- the resonance of the gate;
- rustling trees;
- the neighing of heavenly animals;
- and an incomparable sound produced by a tree moved by wind.
The texts used here do not directly establish an earthly orchestra, modern musical instruments or the exact musical scales and rhythms of Paradise.
The most accurate expression is:
an incomparable heavenly sound produced within the living natural environment of Paradise.
Short Comment
Heavenly sound should be described according to the narration rather than automatically equated with worldly musical instruments.

Complete Sensory Description
According to the Qur’an and the Shia narrations gathered in this chapter, Paradise will be an immeasurably vast, multi-level and living realm.
It will contain numerous Gardens rather than one small garden. Some Gardens will be higher in rank than others. Al-Firdaws will rise above Paradise, and rivers will emerge from its slopes and spread through the Gardens. Al-Wasīlah will rise above all the Gardens.
Its residents will occupy beautiful and pure homes, palaces, elevated chambers and residences built above other residences. Rivers will flow beneath these homes.
The buildings will be formed from gold, silver, pearl, ruby, emerald and bestowed light. Their ceilings will be gold interwoven with silver. Some chambers will have one thousand golden doors. Some palaces will be so radiant that their interiors can be seen through their exteriors.
The dwellings of the highest inhabitants will shine like stars seen from a distance.
Its great walls will contain alternating bricks of silver, gold, pearl and ruby. Their mortar will be musk and saffron. Their upper structures will shine with light, and the inhabitants will see their faces reflected within them.
The land will contain silver-like marble, saffron and wars soil, fragrant musk and pebbles of pearl and ruby. Pearls and coral will yield beneath the inhabitants’ feet.
Its furnishings will be made from silk, brocade, pearl and ruby, yet will remain lighter than feathers and softer than silk. Musk, camphor and ambergris will fill the couches and furnishings.
Its Gardens will contain intense greenery, spreading branches, thornless trees, fruit, date palms, pomegranates and vegetation whose abundance resembles leaves and stars.
Its trees will be rooted within mounds of musk beside rivers. Their branches will carry clusters resembling pearls. Their fruit will hang close, move toward the inhabitants, answer their desires and even speak to them.
Its shade will be permanent and extended.
Its rivers will contain pure water, unchanged milk, pleasant heavenly drink and purified honey. They will flow beneath residences and throughout private Gardens. They will require no dug channels and will move wherever Allah’s friend desires.
The riverbeds will contain fragrant musk, pearls and rubies. The spring of Firdaws will be sweeter than honey, softer than butter, colder than snow and more fragrant than musk.
The climate will contain neither oppressive sun nor bitter cold. The inhabitants will remain permanently safe from harmful heat and cold.
The direct al-Kāfī description compares the gentle environment to the period between the appearance of dawn and sunrise—and states that it will be even more pleasant.
The Qur’an speaks of morning and evening provision, but the exact astronomical system of time within eternal Paradise has not been directly defined in a verified Ma‘ṣūm narration used in this chapter. Therefore, neither an ordinary earthly solar cycle nor total darkness should be asserted without direct evidence.
The atmosphere will contain clouds that shade the inhabitants and rain musk and saffron. Winds from the direction of the Throne will scatter jasmine and white flowers.
The fragrance of Paradise will travel across an extraordinary distance. The transmitted Shia reports preserve variants of five hundred, one thousand and two thousand years.
Fragrance will arise from the ground, walls, mortar, furnishings, rivers, drinks, clouds, flowers and moving air.
The inhabitants will hear no lies, insults, meaningless shouting, obscenity or sinful speech. They will not hear even the sound of Hell.
They will hear:
- Allah’s greeting of peace;
- angels entering through every gate;
- repeated greetings of “Peace, peace”;
- glorification and praise;
- the resonant sound of the heavenly gates;
- fruits speaking;
- horses neighing among the trees;
- trees rustling beside the rivers;
- and a tree moved by the wind at Allah’s command, producing a sound unlike anything creation has ever heard.
Paradise will therefore be a world in which:
every sight is radiant, every fragrance is pure, every surface is comfortable, every climate is gentle, every sound is peaceful and every part of the environment responds to the honour and desire of Allah’s friends.
